Over recent seasons, Nicolas Ghesquière has had a select few on speed dial to lens his various different advertising campaigns for Louis Vuitton. As a result, the storied French fashion house’s most recent campaign imagery has been lensed by Ethan James Green, Glen Luchford and David Sims. Ghesquière calls upon Sims once again with the unveiling of the Spring 2024 campaign. Models Loli Bahia, Ida Heiner, Hejia Li and actress Cynthia Erivo assemble before the British photographer’s lens and pose high a top a glass-fronted building on location in Milan. The clear blue skies and Milanese backdrop make for an arresting backdrop against Ghesquière’s Parisian-inspired collection.

Ghesquière’s mainline Vuitton campaigns tend to be over-complicated in terms of concepts, so the sight of something more minimal is pleasing me to no end. In complete agreement was dontbeadrag, echoing: “These are good, and I neither am a fan of Louis Vuitton nor of Nicolas, but when it works – it works. Cold and sterile environment, but that sunlight and the styling just work. It is a little basic and simple, but in all the right places.”

Not everyone, however, was so forthcoming. “What a tragic campaign. David Sims is so boring, contrived and so horribly commercial. A joke!” stated 90sFan.

Supermodels, glamour and sex appeal have been synonymous with Versace, ever since the late Gianni Versace founded the brand back in the late 70s. Nothing much has changed with Donatella Versace as creative director either. For the Italian fashion house’s Spring 2024 campaign, supermodels, glamour and sex appeal reign supreme. Subsequent to closing the show during Milan Fashion Week back in September, Donatella welcomes none other than Claudia Schiffer as the star of the campaign, along with models Loli Bahia and Mona Tougaard. The girls pose for Mert Alas (who goes without his creative counterpart Marcus Piggott this season), and pose up a storm inside the studio, with the series of campaign images paying homage to the Richard Avedon-shot Versace campaigns of the past.

Willy Vanderperre remains a firm fave of Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons. The Belgian photographer replaced David Sims as Prada’s campaign photographer and made his grand Prada return for the Fall 2023 season, in addition to capturing the brand’s recent Holiday 2023 campaign installment.

Vanderperre evidently remains in the good grace of Prada’s co-creative directors for the Spring 2024 campaign, boasting a mammoth of models – just about all the women who walked the show during MFW. The year 2023 gave us the relaunch of Harper’s Bazaar France and since March, we’ve been dazzled by covers starring the likes of Rianne van Rompaey, Imaan Hammam, Catherine Deneuve and Amelia Gray to name a select few. Editor Olivier Lalanne bestows upon us a duo of special covers lensed by photographer Juergen Teller to close out the year and usher us into 2024. On cover one, Lalanne welcomes back French model Loli Bahia as cover girl, complete with the current face of Chanel wearing a navy blue tank dress from Saint Laurent. French-British actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg poses on cover two, captured within the walls of her father’s (singer Serge Gainsbourg) former Paris home on rue de Verneuil for an issue dedicated to the spirit and charm of the French capital.

As one would expect when multi-covers are thrown our way, only one was guaranteed to standout. “Love Loli’s cover. Charlotte’s cover is a letdown,” shared forum member mikel.

“Loli’s cover is nice, I love the colors. Charlotte’s cover is a miss unfortunately,” Urban Stylin echoed.

“I actually love Loli Bahia’s cover. Juergen is at his best when the subject/model/clothes are more glamorous, hence why I always love his Saint Laurent campaigns,” admired Overindulgence.

“I don’t know who thought Juergen’s work is cover material. Loli’s cover is alright and Charlotte’s reminds me of the covers we would get during the pandemic via FaceTime,” described an underwhelmed fenty.

Vogue28 wasn’t feeling it either, expressing: “Much prefer Loli Bahia’s cover over Charlotte Gainsbourg’s, which I believe should never have seen the light of day. Two majorly underwhelming covers to close out 2023, if you ask me. A real shame too, because Harper’s Bazaar France has been great to us throughout 2023.”

Virginie Viard remains dependent upon Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin to capture her vision of today’s ultimate Chanel woman, as the fabled French fashion house’s creative director welcomes back the Dutch photographic duo to lens the Cruise 2024 campaign (fresh from shooting Fall 2023). Viard muses Loli Bahia and Anna Ewers feature as the faces of the collection, who both evoke the spirit of the collection by transporting us to Venice Beach in Los Angeles, captured by I&V at sunset and into nightfall. The Californian setting ultimately renders as the ideal backdrop for the campaign. After all, the house of Chanel ventured almost 6,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to LA for the unveiling of the Cruise 2024 showcase back in May.

The end result, however, caused a divide amongst members of theFashionSpot forums. “Too much Photoshop, it looks cheap. The lightning is so bad,” shrieked Bombshell1.

“The teasers for the collection starring Alma Jodorowsky were far superior than this! I love I&V’s work, approve of the two models here, love the colors but the end result leaves a whole lot to be desired. It’s all just a bit… flat and one-dimensional,” an underwhelmed vogue28 critiqued.

Also unimpressed was RMDV, adding: “Anna looks like one of the women from the cast of Selling OC wearing a ridiculous tween/barbie outfit!”

“It does have a 90s Chanel playful feel but the hair and personality is lacking. Claudia Schiffer or Stephanie Seymour would have blown it out of the water,” Urban Stylin pointed out.

“I mean, it would have been a perfect opportunity to have house ambassador Margot Robbie as the OG for the campaign. Beautiful colors and composition but terrible campaign,” Lola701 voiced.

“I think it’s appropriate for the Los Angeles inspiration of the collection. Don’t love it, but I’m always happy to see Anna,” chimed in KoV.

It has now been a total of seven consecutive seasons in which Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin have remained Virginie Viard’s mainline campaign photographers of choice at Chanel, having officially formed their partnership with the Fall 2020 campaign which starred an impressive cast of models. Now, for Fall 2023, the Dutch photographic duo are behind the lens once again as per Viard’s request, as the creative twosome capture Loli Bahia as the face and embodiment of the French fashion house’s latest collection. In the chic and minimal campaign images, the French model of Algerian descent (who has previously fronted Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2022 and Cruise 2023 campaigns) goes solo against a dark grey studio backdrop, which ultimately allows Viard’s camellia-inspired collection to do all the talking.

A job well done? Our forum members think not. “Sorry, but who wants to look and be like her?” quizzed VERNIQUE. “Miserable clothes on a bored-looking girl in front of a grey wall: it’s the big depression!”
“Go Loli, give us nothing!” laughed an unenthusiastic TunHakii.
“I really don’t understand the fascination with this girl, worse than Kendall [Jenner] IMO,” NicholasII voiced.
Also left majorly underwhelmed with the outcome was yslforever, adding: “The outfits were already awful on the runway, here Chanel achieves to make them look worse. What a waste of good fabrics…”
“This is so boring. Chanel lost its spark,” declared Creative.
“This reminds me of the Chanel campaign I hate the most, the Fall 2015 one – same annoying grey background without any nuance on the lighting,” noted Lola701.
Forum member Kerg asked: “Maybe the problem is more with Inez & Vinoodh than Loli? Honestly, I&V don’t fit Chanel. They suited Emmanuelle Alt’s Vogue Paris perfectly but Chanel is a different level. They’re clearly not made for advertising…”

Loli Bahia, Adit Priscilla and Mica Argañaraz star in the chic and minimalist campaign set against a stark white backdrop styled by Ib Kamara.

“I love the photography! Feels like Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel,” expressed kokobombon the moment the ads dropped.

“Stunning. As if Karl shot it,” echoed TianCouture.

“Mica for Chanel has always been underwhelming for me, but this is kinda cute,” confessed WAVES.

“I’m like a moth to a flame when it comes to Chanel campaigns lately and find this to be a nice departure from the Spring 2022 campaign. The ads have transported us to idyllic locations like Lake Como and the rugged landscape of Iceland. Now Saint Laurent’s Summer 2022 outing whisks us away to Los Angeles. Freja Beha Erichsen, Awar Odhiang, Binx Walton, Loli Bahia and Bethany Nagy become the faces of the season’s chic and high-octane collection posing in front of flashy cars and around a motel.

Once again, a Saint Laurent campaign absolutely enthralled our forum members. “I love it!” exclaimed Urban Stylin.

“I love the colors and the photos against the cars,” wrote guimon.

“I want to be those women,” confessed matheus_s.

“I’ve become a fast fan of this and very much appreciate the warmth of Juergen Teller’s photography here and shooting the campaign on location in Los Angeles was a good move. The focus is very much on the clothes, which I appreciate also and the casting is terrific. Glorious!” raved vogue28.

For over three decades as Max Mara’s creative director, Ian Griffiths has selected Steven Meisel to lens the majority of the brand’s advertising campaigns. They’ve included everyone from Gigi Hadid to Faretta to Fei Fei Sun to Joan Smalls with last season’s offering celebrating the 70th anniversary of Max Mara. The legendary lensman returns for Spring 2022 with Carine Roitfeld back on styling duties. Loli Bahia, Yilan Hua, Anok Yai and Vittoria Ceretti pose in the studio showcasing the fashion house’s latest collection.

Members of our forums, however, expected more. “I’m missing some movement in the poses,” voiced mikel.

“If ‘go on girl give us nothing’ was a campaign. I get that Max Mara loves their simple no-concept campaigns, but the clothes actually have to look desirable for that to work,” KINGofVERSAILLES chimed in.

“This is terrible. Weak photography aside, there is nothing desirable about this duty-free styling,” critiqued THD96.

“The only campaign images I’m able to tolerate are the ones cropped a little closer (like the one of Vittoria Ceretti wearing the navy outfit). There’s just no life, movement or pizzazz radiating from the full-length images,” explained an underwhelmed vogue28.

“This is really bad coming from Meisel…” confessed zacatecas570.

“Vittoria looks dry and washed out. That hair color is a disaster,” added GivenchyHomme.

“I loved Vittoria’s hair on the runway, but apparently it doesn’t translate to print…not Max Mara’s best,” admitted aracic.

But not everyone shared the same sentiment. “I don’t get the dislike. All I see is a rather stunning Max Mara campaign… Yes it’s basic, but it’s Meisel basic, which I’ve always liked,” approved Benn98.

Teller is back for Winter 2021 whisking us off to a remote part of Iceland where Alyda Grace, Anok Yai, Awar Odhiang, Blessing Orji, Evie Harris, Kiki Willems, Loli Bahia, Mica Argañaraz, Mika Schneider, Sihana Shalaj and Steinberg brave the elements.

The ads divided our forums. “I admire this collection so much. So the idea of the juxtaposition between beautiful clothes with the stunning location is a win to me,” applauded elle_gb.

“Never been one for Juergen Teller, but this is yet another absolute knockout Saint Laurent campaign photographed by Teller! The location is gorgeous, adore the juxtaposition between the rugged Icelandic scenery and Anthony Vaccarello’s high-glam collection,” echoed vogue28.

“It’s actually decent and doesn’t look like Juergen Teller’s work in a very good way,” appreciated amby.

“God, I feel so sorry for the girls. That place must have been freezing!” wrote thiago:).

“I wish this was a bit more aspirational and glamorous. While I find the setting to be beautiful and special, the campaign is missing a bit of fantasy and leaves me feeling as cold as the place it was shot. But maybe it’s just Juergen who I’m not the biggest fan of in the first place,” admitted reese06.

“That beach looks just as arid as Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent in terms of ideas. I will say that the images are quite nice even if Kiki looks like she’s five seconds away from succumbing to hypothermia,” commented YohjiAddict.
