The Fall 2024 season of Paris Fashion Week remains in full-swing. Each and every day, there’s a guaranteed thrill from the designers and fashion houses featured on the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode’s jam-packed schedule. Day five of PFW and we’ve already bared witness to Christian Dior‘s Maria Grazia Chiuri paying tribute to her predecessor Marc Bohan and watched Anthony Vaccarello double down on the sheer trend. Chemena Kamali has since made her highly-anticipated (and highly-praised) debut as Chloé creative director while Rick Owens‘ otherworldly collection left us in awe.

After a marathon of shows and lookbook releases, fashion month is now over. Paris Fashion Week Fall 2022 was truly something to behold. It’s all thanks to the designers demonstrating more creativity and resilience than ever before.

First up was Off-White where the in-house design team and superstar cast payed tribute to Virgil Abloh. Maria Grazia Chiuri offered up perhaps her most experimental collection for Christian Dior yet. At Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello layered dresses with strong-shouldered faux fur coats and killer heels. Olivier Rousteing mixed some of Balmain‘s earliest codes with protective gear, while Gabriela Hearst gave us chic tailoring, hiking boots and recycled cashmere ponchos via Chloe. Jonathan Anderson stimulated our senses with leather, felt, latex, 3-D-printed fiber and sophisticated design motifs at Loewe’s spectacular show.

The hottest ticket in town was arguably Balenciaga where Demna Gvasalia dedicated the collection to fearlessness, resistance and victory of love and peace in solidarity with Ukraine. Valentino focused on neon pink. Moving from its usual location, Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton show was held at the magnificent Musée d’Orsay as all of his muses seated in the front row digested the mix of suiting, dresses and knitwear. The entire Chanel show centered around tweed as Virginie Viard found inspiration from England during the 60s. Barely-there miniskirts are here to stay, at least according to Miuccia Prada. She also gave us micro shorts at Miu Miu rounding out the week in style.

US InStyle March 2022 : Gigi Hadid by Yulia GorbachenkoSince her very first Vogue cover back in 2015, Gigi Hadid has always delivered the goods down at newsstands. Whether she’s fronting V Magazine, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Allure or Vogue, the results are almost always great. InStyle is the latest publication to book the American beauty, who takes to the magazine for March 2022. Photographed by Yulia Gorbachenko and styled by Julia von Boehm, the current face of Moschino sports an Off-White creation for the newsstand cover photograph (below), while posing in a retro bathroom wearing head-to-toe Gucci for the subscribers’ alternative (after the jump).

The covers immediately caught the attention of our forum members. “The main cover is shamefully bad. Like maybe one of the worst InStyle covers ever? Gigi looks bewildered… The bathtub one is significantly better, but still not ‘fashion issue’ cover-worthy,” remarked KINGofVERSAILLES. “Nothing more glamorous and flattering than a mid-yawning pose,” mocked Marc10. “Wow, Gigi’s open mouth completely ruins the first cover,” mikel pointed out.

“No one in their right mind would look at the first picture and think ‘this will look great as a magazine cover’,” declared 90sbea. “Perhaps the most unflattering cover image I’ve ever seen of Gigi Hadid and while it’s always a pleasure to see models on the covers of mainstream fashion titles, that open mouth is just downright…unsightly,” voiced vogue28. Bertrando3 could not have agreed more: “Both covers are SUPER BAD. Who in their right mind would approve a yawning cover and a second one where she looks drunk?” “Gosh this is embarrassing,” echoed a disapproving phungnam96.

UK Vogue November 2020 : Serena Williams by Zoe Ghertner

Edward Enninful is still on a mission splashing British Vogue‘s front covers with subjects who have never graced the magazine before. Lupita Nyong’o, Irina Shayk, Jodie Comer and Emma Corrin all made their debuts just this year. Now Enninful scores none other than Serena Williams. The three-time American Vogue cover star and Stuart Weitzman brand ambassador takes to the British fashion bible’s November 2020 installment posing for photographer Zoë Ghertner. The tennis ace dons a custom Nike x Off-White dress picked by Julia Sarr-Jamois for the fresh and inviting newsstand cover image.

“This is just so U.S. Vogue. Can Edward treat this as a British magazine for now at least before he gets Anna Wintour’s job?” commented Flamingjune the moment the cover dropped.

“I thought this was U.S. Vogue and it could’ve been shot by Annie Leibovitz,” KateTheGreatest chimed in.

“We already have an American Vogue Edward and trust us, we don’t need another,” stated A.D.C.

KINGofVERSAILLES wasn’t jumping for joy, either. “The cropping, the way her eyes look nearly closed, the hairstyle and the overabundance of summery white on a November issue are all not quite working for me.”

“Not Vogue enough, this basic image belongs on SELF,” MDNA pointed out.

“Zoë Ghertner’s photography here is naff and all I want to do is tilt and shift the cover image because the cropping is awful. I guess I can appreciate the cover for its minimalism — and nothing else. Overall, the cover is indeed very American Vogue and offers nothing new,” voiced vogue28.

But not everyone shared the same sentiment. “I love it, the minimalism and the slight touch of red look very classic. It’s also nice to see a softer side to Serena…” admired Urban Stylin.

“That’s a beautiful cover,” agreed crmsnsnwflks.

US Vogue September 2020 by Jordan Casteel & Kerry James Marshall

From covers celebrating global beauty to the magazine’s beautiful and symbolic answer to the pandemic to a powerful Simone Biles cover just last month, Vogue has been nothing short of amazing this year thus far. Anna Wintour isn’t about to let standards slip with the unveiling of the title’s all-important September 2020 issue. Names like Kamala Harris, Naomi Campbell and Gigi Hadid floated around our Cover Rumor Thread, but Wintour is full of surprises bestowing upon us a pair of covers by American artists Jordan Casteel and Kerry James Marshall. Cover one (below) created by Casteel features Aurora James on a Brooklyn rooftop draped in Pyer Moss, while Marshall’s alternative (after the jump) showcases a fictional character wearing Off-White.

How did the mag’s latest fare on our forums? “An illustrated cover? This is so very…May 2020 now that the VAST majority of Vogues around the globe have managed to produce conventional photoshoots amid the pandemic. Surely a Vogue-worthy fashion photographer was available in New York. Not into this at all,” voiced vogue28.

“Hope? More like Nope. This is abysmal. Wintour should have left over a decade ago, but her gigantic ego will not let that happen of course. Another nail in the coffin of U.S. Vogue,” added SanderGreen.

“I’m just…so tired. What a missed opportunity to create a beautiful, powerful, uplifting cover. All these attempts at the theme of ‘hope’ have been utterly hopeless. No wonder no one’s buying magazines,” LastNight chimed in.

KINGofVERSAILLES wasn’t impressed, either. “I don’t like this painting at all as a magazine cover, certainly not for the September issue of Vogue…”

“I’m all for cover illustrations, but when they are pretty and done right, not done tacky and looking like they should be in a children’s book. This isn’t even a cover that embodies fashion or glamour or anything!” proclaimed Mercury6181.

Change is in the air over at Marie Claire and Aya Kanai‘s first issue is finally here. We’re all for seeing fresh faces on the covers of our favorite fashion glossies and the new editor in chief gives the covers of the magazine’s global beauty issue for May 2020 to Megan Thee Stallion. Serving up a pair of vintage-inspired covers, the American rapper, singer and songwriter poses before the lens of photographer Micaiah Carter with Megan decked out in Off-White for cover one (below) and a hooded Balmain number for cover two (after the jump) both picked by celebrity stylist Memsor.

The covers proved to be hit or miss for our forum members. “Megan looks stunning! Love the colors and definitely would not have thought this was shot by Micaiah Carter. Love how Marie Claire is adapting to the times by enlisting a black photographer,” applauded Benn98.

“The first one is cool — covers with profile photographs can be refreshing from time to time,” appreciated Srdjan.

“My fave is the first, love the use of the profile shot, the dress, those warm colors for a May cover and the minimal art direction. I loathe how the second cover looks more like an album cover…” vogue28 chimed in.

In the same frame of mind was KINGofVERSAILLES: “I love everything about this! Megan looks terrific and I love the color story and 70s feel of it all.”

“Getting vintage vibes from the colors to the photography and I quite like that,” echoed FashionMuseDior.

Zorka couldn’t disagree more. “Don’t know who she is, but the whole thing looks extremely tacky and cheap to me.”

“The graphic design is terrible,” exclaimed matheus_s.

Fashion month is officially over. Paris Fashion Week just wrapped after the industry’s elite took in all the Fall 2020 season had to offer. So now it’s time to see which collections our unfiltered fashion critics loved and loathed from the French capital.

Which designers reigned supreme?

Dries Van Noten slayed (like always). Bruno Sialelli finally delivered a divine Lanvin collection complete with an all-star cast. Anthony Vaccarello delved into the Yves Saint Laurent archives for his sexy spin on the signature codes of the iconic fashion house. Clare Waight Keller went all “French grande dame” on us, while Olivier Rousteing’s latest Balmain offering is a vast improvement from previous seasons.

Which designers missed the mark?

Sadly, the list is long and not so distinguished. Christian Dior really needs to find a replacement for Maria Grazia Chiuri. John Galliano needs to stop trying to make goat-toe shoes happen. Demna Gvasalia basically gave us Vetements on a Balenciaga budget. Meanwhile, Katie Grand is single-handedly running Miu Miu into the ground. And Chanel stumbles once again sans Karl Lagerfeld.

Ready to see which shows received rave reviews and which were roasted by our forum members? (Some of their favorites may actually surprise you.) Click through the slideshow to discover all the hits and misses of Paris Fashion Week Fall 2020.

Off-White Spring 2020 Global fashion search platform Lyst just dropped the latest edition of its The Lyst Index, a quarterly report outlining what’s hot when it comes to fashion. While we’re already filling our shopping carts with quilted sandals, mini bags and printed sweaters (all hot per Lyst), it’s the top brands list that really caught our attention. Especially since Off-White is back in the top spot, despite Virgil Abloh’s well-documented absence from the brand’s Spring 2020 show. Since the launch of the index two years ago, Balenciaga, Gucci and Vetements have made the list every quarter with both Balenciaga and Gucci consistently listed among the top three hottest brands. This quarter followed the same pattern as Balenciaga and Gucci ranked second and third, respectively. We aren’t at all surprised to see Versace jump from sixth place last quarter to fourth after Jennifer Lopez‘s epic turn on the brand’s Spring 2020 runway. But the fashion house that got the biggest bump was, drumroll please, Bottega Veneta, going from 37 all the way up to 16. (It probably helps that the brand’s padded sandals are the hottest product around.) Check out the full top 20 list below to see if your favorite brand made the cut.
  1. Off-White
  2. Balenciaga
  3. Gucci
  4. Versace
  5. Prada
  6. Valentino
  7. Fendi
  8. Burberry
  9. Saint Laurent
  10. Vetements
  11. Stone Island
  12. Nike
  13. Givenchy
  14. Moncler
  15. Dolce & Gabbana
  16. Bottega Veneta

Not even the gloomy weather could dampen the fashion pack’s spirits as they flooded Paris for fashion week. The highlights? Maria Grazia Chiuri kicked things off by staging Christian Dior’s collection on a recyclable set. Anthony Vaccarello showed off Saint Laurent’s latest in front of the Eiffel Tower with a little help from Naomi Campbell. All eyes were on Virginie Viard as she made her RTW debut at Chanel. And Dries Van Noten dropped a bomb by revealing legendary French couturier Christian Lacroix helped design his Spring 2020 offering.

Now that Paris Fashion Week is over, it’s time for us to reveal which shows earned high marks and which ones fell flat. Click through the slideshow to check out all the hits and misses.

Virgil Abloh is one of the busiest people in the fashion industry. From designing in-demand apparel via Off-White to serving as artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, he’s got a lot going on. While he may seem superhuman, he still needs rest, just like the rest of us. So it wasn’t too surprising to hear Abloh tell Vogue that all this traveling all over the world has worn him down. No need to worry, though. The designer assures he’s not seriously ill, but his doctors advised him to take it easy for the next few months. “Essentially I’m working from home for the next three months, and in large part all my marketing events I’m cancelling.” (That includes promotional appearances for his Nike and IKEA collabs.) Although we won’t get to see Abloh take his usual victory lap after Off-White’s Paris presentation, we’re still excited to see what he has up his sleeve for Spring 2020.
