Award season is well and truly underway and W Magazine, as always, is jumping on the hype. Back in January, like clockwork, Sara Moonves bestowed upon us the annual ‘Best Performances‘ issue and follows it up with ‘The Directors Issue’ which has ultimately became a regular occurrence since 2019. This year’s offering for Volume #2 2024 gives us a threesome of covers, directed by a trio of Hollywood’s finest. Cover one is Saltburn‘s Barry Keoghan directed by Emerald Fennell. Secondly, we see actress America Ferrera directed by Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig, who poses in Fendi before the lens of photographer Mickalene Thomas. Anatomy of a Fall‘s Sandra Hüller is directed by Justine Triet on cover three, and captured by photographer Tyler Mitchell wearing a Louis Vuitton dress.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“An instant must-have,” raved KoV the moment the Barry Keoghan’s cover struck.

“Seems like he’s gonna be the new Ezra Miller,” noted phungam96.

“Buffy, Twilight, pearls and latex… they’re working overtime on the gay gaze and I hate to admit that it’s working. But America’s works better for me as a cover, she looks quite stunning,” voiced aracic.

Also very much a fan of Ferrera’s cover was forum member GivenchyAddict: “America is STUNNING. Bravo W!”

“America’s cover story is DIVINEEEE! She’s so fab, OMG!” fenty exclaimed.

“Oh Sandra looks AMAZING,” chimed in Kite.

“I love the 3 covers and respective editorials! I’m going bankrupt this month!” declared WAVES.

As editor of W Magazine, Sara Moonves has made the magazine’s ‘Best Performances’ issues into a bit of a thing. Since 2021 when the annual edition first made its official appearance, issues have been photographed by an array of celebrated photographers including Juergen Teller, Tim Walker and Jamie Hawkesworth. Moonves welcomes back Teller with open arms for W‘s 2024 portfolio, bestowing upon us an assortment of 13 covers featuring a whole bevy of A-list talent. In each of the covers Margot Robbie, Nicolas Cage, Greta Lee, Zac Efron, Natalie Portman, Colman Domingo, Jodie Foster, Ryan Gosling, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Julianne Moore, Lily Gladstone, Charles Melton and Robert Downey Jr. pose before Teller’s lens around various different Hollywood locations.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Honestly, not sure what to think of these…” shared Ivancica the moment the covers dropped.

“These are all depressing to look at. Juergen even managed to make Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling look lifeless,” chimed in gunsnroses.

Also left severely disappointed was forum member lookatme, commenting: “Tragic. This kind of photography and concept is so embarrassing. OMG SO QUIRKED UP! THEY’RE IN A TRASHY SOUVENIR SHOP! HE’S HOLDING A LOBSTER! OMG!”

Xone felt the same way: “Teller needs a better direction, there is nothing interesting here – too pretentious!”

“These best performances issues by Juergen Teller (and everyone else) are the absolute worst when it comes to Sara Moonves’ W Magazine! Not one, not ONE redeeming cover and this is one of those occasions in which I cannot abide Teller’s photography or aesthetic. Major… UGH!” ranted vogue28.

W Magazine, you’ve been doing amazing sweetie. The Fall Fashion extravaganza back in September served up a total of six sensational covers for us to choose from down at the newsstand (with models-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber, Anok Yai, Gigi Hadid, Mona Tougaard, Liu Wen and Kendall Jenner). Sofia Coppola was soon reuniting which master photographer Steven Meisel with the unveiling of Volume #5 and now at the request of editor Sara Mooves, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos team up for W‘s latest dedicated to all-things art. The Greek filmmaker directs the American actress (who stars in Lanthimos’ black comedy fantasy film Poor Things) in the cover shoot for Volume #6, dressed in a Nicolas Ghesquière-designed look from Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2024 collection (a brand to which Stone is brand ambassador).

W‘s latest had members of our forums a divided bunch. “I don’t hate it but also don’t like it,” voiced Kimy Jo the second the cover came to light.

“Looks pretentious and boring,” critiqued thenewclassic.

“After those terrific model covers by Mert Alas back in September, which was followed up with the divine Sofia Coppola cover by Steven Meisel… I feel somewhat disappointed by W on this occasion. Not a fan of this cover, whatsoever!” vogue28 exclaimed.

Mikel, however, was quick to describe the cover as “gorgeous”.

“I like it, it’s different,” admired blueorchid.

“I also think this is quite nice, I like the graphic design of the cover. Very well done! W is really having a little renaissance lately, no?” asked aracic.

There’s something going on over at W Magazine HQ, and we are 110% behind it. Just last month, the magazine’s editor Sara Moonves dropped not one but five celebratory fashion covers featuring models-of-the-moment. Now, for Volume #5 2023 which is an issue dedicated to originals, Moonves throws us yet another surprise and bestows upon us Sofia Coppola through the masterful lens of none other than firm forum fave Steven Meisel. In the cinematic black and white cover image, the American filmmaker looks divine all glammed up wearing a little black Chanel number from the French fashion house’s Fall 2023 haute couture collection, as chosen for the occasion by stylist Karl Templer.

Needless to say, W‘s latest went down an absolute treat on our forums. “Meisel and Coppola are a great duo. Love their chemistry,” noted KINGofVERSAILLES.
“Oh good LORD this is absolutely divine, an absolute delight and a total feast for the eyes. Fantastic to see Sofia Coppola and even more so to reunite with Steven Meisel. These are people at the top of their game, and it shows. What a dream team. Those photographs of Sofia are heavenly, love the haaaaaair, the makeup, the Chanel, the lighting, the atmosphere… you name it,” raved vogue28.
“The cover is a glorious serve,” enthused mepps.
Also equally as impressed was forum member kasper, commenting: “This is THE fashion photography I like: expensive, high-class, charming, elegant and sophisticated.”
“This is so good. It reminds me of the first Sofia Coppola cover of Vogue Italia (by Meisel too of course) for December 1992. She brings here her Italian roots, the dignified mature woman she is now,” admired jjjmmm.
HodanChloe described the cover as “gorgeous” and we’re not sure anyone could possibly disagree.

Mert Alas (of the photographic duo Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott) recently went solo to photograph Dua Lipa for Vogue France and is now out on his lonesome once again to capture not one but six spectacular covers for W Magazine’s mega Fall Fashion Issue for 2023. Editor Sara Moonves welcomes Kaia Gerber, Anok Yai, Gigi Hadid, Mona Tougaard, Liu Wen and Kendall Jenner as cover girls for the occasion, who each front their respective fierce and fabulous covers, donning looks from brands such as Celine, Fendi, Burberry, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton.

As always with a multi-selection of covers, members of our forums were quick to select their fave. “I like them all, but my favorite is actually Gigi’s,” immediately voiced kokobombon.
“Really into the art direction! The Gigi cover is my fave. Marie-Amelie Sauvé really made the Burberry look interesting and desirable,” GivenchyAddict admired.
“I love these. These instantly took me back to Vogue Paris’ special collections editorials. The mix of outdoor shots then you’ll have studio portraits. Can’t believe W Magazine takes the cake,” MON chimed in.
Also very much a fan was Ihhbl, commenting: “I like Anok’s, it’s so different from the others. Gigi also looks great!”
“Terrific to see W Magazine back on full form, and feels like Christmas has came early with the massive ‘fashion!’ splashed across the cover, in addition to the rather terrific selection of covers. The art direction immediately transported me back to 2008 (in the very best way). Out of all the six covers, Gigi’s is my most fave,” vogue28 raved.

W Magazine Volume #3 2022 : Lana Del Rey by Jamie Hawkesworth

We’ve come to the realization that W isn’t what it once was. There’s zero denying, however, that Sara Moonves gives it her all when producing each and every issue. The magazine still manages to secure A-list talent like Dolly Parton, Kristen Stewart and Zendaya. For the title’s annual music issue, it forgoes the standard multi-cover subjects in favor of Lana Del Rey. The singer and songwriter fronts two covers appearing before the lens of photographer Jamie Hawkesworth. Dressed for the occasion in looks from Celine and Gucci, Lana smiles in both black and white images shot on location at Hempstead House in Sands Point, New York.

Although members of our forums aren’t sold on the outcome. “Quite unpleasant,” described Kite.

“Sorry, no,” commented Kimy Jo.

“I’ve missed Jamie Hawkesworth. He did an excellent job at American Vogue. But this is tragic,” confessed caioherrero.

“How long until this magazine folds completely at this point?” wondered blueorchid.

“This is so unflattering that I don’t even know where to start so I’ll just end at this — this is very unflattering,” admitted dontbeadrag.

“If I was Lana, I’d sue,” Simera chimed in.

“The angles don’t work for her and the laugh on the cover seems fake,” said Urban Stylin.

“Lana is one of those pop stars with an elaborate image whose vision is better fleshed out by her own team than by the fashion world. Lana’s music videos have this arresting quality, but whenever a fashion magazine shoots her the outcome always falls short of capturing her allure,” declared Ken Doll Jenner.

Sara Moonves continues to ensure W makes an impression down at newsstands. The magazine has secured plenty of A-list talent for its front covers, including everyone from Dolly Parton to Beanie Feldstein. To start 2022 off with a bang, the title drops its annual edition dedicated to best performances bestowing upon us 10 collectible covers. This year’s lineup includes Kristen Stewart, Denzel Washington, Benedict Cumberbatch, Gemma Chan, Jessica Chastain, Adam Driver, Honor Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Hudson all photographed by Tim Walker.

Naturally, only a few stood out. “Kristen looks good, usually that bored face never helps her, but it was a good thing in that vintage vibe!” declared DK92.

“The Tilda cover is, as usual, stunning and probably my favorite of the bunch. I also like Cate and Kristen…” noted [Piece Of Me].

“Oh, I just love that Kristen Stewart cover! Love when she gets some proper styling and the retro wig looks stunning on her,” aracic pointed out.

Kristen’s cover also caught the attention of vogue28: “Absolutely love how Kristen Stewart has photographed for this (and I’m not even a Tim Walker fan), love the yellow Chanel, the voluminous hairdo and the strong sense of retro glamour. My most favorite cover from the bunch…”

Everyone else expected better, however. “All these covers do not appeal to me. They look awful. Just like the magazine itself. Kind of surprised this magazine still exists,” stated cottonmouth13.

“Every single cover sucks. All of them,” disapproved mepps.

“I find this quite mediocre…photography, styling, art direction. Pretty tragic,” proclaimed Lola701.

It’s no secret that due to the ongoing global health crisis, magazines have been hit hard. Despite the best efforts of editors to keep our favorite glossies afloat, there have been some changes. Which translated to historic moments down at newsstands when it came to 2021 magazine covers.

Condé Nast streamlined operations. Editions of Vogue now share content as a cost-cutting exercise resulting in some being left unable to produce localized content. Nevertheless, we encountered back-to-back British Vogue covers photographed by forum favorite Steven Meisel. Anna Wintour also appears to be shaking things up over at American Vogue with 14 of the magazine’s 20 cover stars never gracing the fashion bible before. Not to mention Emmanuelle Alt departing Vogue Paris on a high note with the unveiling of the title’s landmark 100th anniversary issue.

Meanwhile Samira Nasr continues to find her footing at American Harper’s Bazaar. Laura Brown’s InStyle remains one of the most buzzworthy publications. Michelle Lee helped Allure celebrate 30 years in print. At i-D, Alastair McKimm’s mission to reinstate the magazine as one of the most cutting-edge publications appears to be working.

From overuse of Photoshop on Madonna’s cover of V Magazine to Iman gracing British Harper’s Bazaar to diversity reigning supreme at British Vogue, here are the best and worst magazine covers of 2021.

W Magazine Volume #5 2021 : Dolly Parton by Harmony KorineIt has taken some time for Sara Moonves to get W Magazine back on track and back on our radar. Following the magazine’s offering for Volume #4 2021, which featured Beanie Feldstein, Emma Corrin, Thuso Mbedu and Julia Garner, the publication is regaining momentum. Now the mag has secured none other than Dolly Parton for Volume #5 2021. It’s a very rare occasion to see the legendary American country music star greet us down at newsstands. This time around she’s decked out in a glitzy Chanel jumpsuit and jewelry from Chopard and Tiffany & Co. posing with dolls modeled after herself in the kitsch cover shot photographed by Harmony Korine.

All things considered, members of our forums were far from impressed. “That’s one ugly cover. She deserves way better!” declared mikel. “Yikes. I know Dolly is the queen of tacky and kitsch, but this is so poorly done. It looks sad,” stated MyNameIs. “How dare they! To do this to Dolly…the sweetest person in America… Oh no…” called out oaklee91.

VogueDisciple93 shared the same sentiment: “Fire. Everyone. They did Dolly dirty.” “So cheap-looking and basic, we needed over-the-top tacky!” voiced kokobombon. “OMG, this took me back to those amateur Photoshop edits of random Myspace pictures at night!” FashionMuseDior pointed out. “They could have done something very unconventional and fashion-forward in her aesthetic, but this is incredibly amateur,” added Urban Stylin. “After digesting this monstrosity, I’m now envisioning what Dolly Parton by Steven Meisel would’ve turned out like had Stefano Tonchi and Edward Enninful still been at W Magazine,” wondered vogue28. It has been over a year since W Magazine gave us a buzzworthy cover. It’s starting to feel as though the magazine’s glory days are over. Despite the challenges of the pandemic and new ownership, Sara Moonves continues to fight for the publication’s survival. It’s still able to secure big-name celebrities for its covers, though. Now an issue dedicated to pop comes our way with four collectible covers. Beanie Feldstein appears on cover one photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, cover two features Emma Corrin by Tim Walker, Thuso Mbedu takes to cover three captured by Campbell Addy while the fourth goes to Julia Garner snapped by Renell Medrano.

The covers received mixed feedback on our forums. “Can’t go wrong with a classic Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin portrait…” commented aracic.

“Beanie Feldstein’s cover is the only true standout here because a flawless black and white portrait from Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin is always a good idea and an instant classic,” echoed vogue28.

Melancholybaby agreed: “I like Beanie’s cover, it has a certain charm and warmth to it and the layout resembles W‘s glory days.”

“Even Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin can’t save this abysmal magazine,” disagreed MON.

“Emma Corrin is perfect for this kind of shoot, the other covers are so boring,” Ivanity86 chimed in.

YohjiAddict is a fan of Emma’s cover, too. “I think Emma Corrin gave her all and she works as a Tim Walker character, a mischievous and tomboyish one.”

“Tim Walker without a budget is no longer Tim Walker,” said GivenchyAddict.
