Ever since scoring her very first solo Vogue cover and landing her first major advertising gig, Kaia Gerber has remained a force to be reckoned with within the world of fashion. Last year alone saw Cindy Crawford’s mini-me grace the covers of ELLE and W Magazine (to name a select few) and became the face of mega brands Alaïa and Valentino. Not even three months into 2024 and Kaia has fronted the covers of Perfect, British Vogue, WSJ. Magazine and becomes the face of DKNY for Spring 2024. Via the lens of British photographer Alasdair McLellan and styled by Alastair McKimm, Kaia morphs into the ultimate DKNY woman throughout series of campaign portraits, helping herald a new era and a new energy of the iconic American label.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Fresh energy? Where?” asked matheus_s the second the campaign struck.

“Gap circa 2005,” scoffed MyNameIs.

Also far from delighted with the outcome was Toni Ahlgren, commenting: “I’m sorry but that’s a no from me!”

“How can she be so beautiful yet so bland?” FelipeV voiced.

DKNY’s latest ultimately had members of theFashionSpot forums a divided bunch. “I really like the photographs and art direction. Kaia looks beautiful,” MModa admired.

“A rather brilliant campaign, IMO. This is pretty much on the money for a brand like DKNY. Kaia Gerber was the perfect choice – fresh, youthful, radiant and all-American. McLellan’s distinctive and youth-orientated aesthetic only heightens the campaign, and I genuinely don’t have a bad word to say about this. Those portraits of Kaia are superb!” enthused vogue28.

“Love Kaia, always. Young and fresh,” added jeremydante.

There’s no bad time for a new handbag — just some bad months that make you value your rent over Kate Spade. But we’re often so keen on splurging on the super high-end bags that we ignore the more affordable options that are just as chic and fashion police-approved.

From work bags to tiny totes, here are some of the most incredible handbags you can score for under $300.

The Fall 2017 iteration of New York Fashion Week begins Wednesday, February 8 and runs until Thursday, February 16. Roughly 150 fashion labels — big and small — will strut their stuff. However, there will be quite a few marked absences. Blame designers disdain for the stifling fashion calendar, Paris Fashion Week’s elitist allure or Los Angeles’ (seemingly) perpetually sunny skies, but a host of designers are defecting from the Big Apple. (The term “exodus” has been thrown around.) How’s CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb handling the changes? “If the demand for an organized New York Fashion Week diminishes and isn’t important anymore, it will go away by itself,” Kolb told WWD (though he also affirmed he doesn’t see that happening anytime soon). Scroll down for the complete list of traitors relocators.

Proenza Schouler

OK, so it’s not skipping town just yet, but February 13 will mark Proenza’s final (at least for the time being) New York show. Henceforth, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez will be moving their runway to Paris, merging their main and pre-collections and only showing twice a year. Their first Paris-based runway will take place in July, so as to align with Paris Haute Couture week. Of the current state of NYFW, Hernandez observed, “It definitely has changed a lot since we first started showing. There are still superinteresting people showing in New York, but there’s a lot of things that we’re not that interested in in New York.”

Rodarte

Kate and Laura Mulleavy are also City of Lights-bound. Rodarte will no longer show at New York Fashion Week. Instead, the brand will hold a private Fall 2017 presentation this March (coinciding with Paris Fashion Week). Going forward, the Mulleavys will eschew the traditional fashion calendar format. Like Proenza Schouler, Rodarte’s future runway shows will coincide with Paris Haute Couture week in January and July. The Mulleavy sisters will also be adding a third collection to their yearly production calendar — details TBD.

Hood By Air

Shayne Oliver and his underground club kid, art-world and A-list posse are also crossing the Atlantic. Whatever surreal double-facing footwear Oliver’s dreamed up for Fall 2017, it’ll walk in Paris.

Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid will fête their sophomore collection with a Venice Beach, Los Angeles-based see-now-buy-now presentation-slash-party. The oceanside runway show will take place on February 8 and will showcase Hilfiger’s women’s sportswear collection as well as Tommy x Gigi part deux — which is already available for your viewing pleasure.

Rebecca Minkoff

Minkoff will hold a California-themed “runway-to-retail experience” on February 4 at Los Angeles hotspot the Grove. At sundown, the center’s trolley tracks will transform into a runway for a mix of New York and Los Angeles-based models.

Rachel Comey

Rachel Comey will hold her customary fashion dinner-cum-presentation in Los Angeles this February. The site? Downtown gallery Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. The caterer? On-site restaurant Manuela. The date? February 7.

Rachel Zoe

Fashion’s other leading Rachel has also ditched New York for L.A. Her February 1 Fall 2017 presentation will also have some see-now-buy-now mixed in. The queen of boho-glam plans to continue to show in Los Angeles “for a minute.”

Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon presented their Spring 2017 wares via a protest-spirited, Justin Peck-choreographed ballet entitled The Times are Racing. The brand’s see-now-buy-now performance took place at Lincoln Center on January 28. Among the hip fashion crowd were Solange Knowles and St. Vincent (natch).

Vera Wang Spring 2017 finale; Image: Imaxtree

Vera Wang

Vera Wang will display her Fall 2017 collection by way of a short fashion film, hitting the interwebs February 28. That same day, Wang will be honored as a Chevalier of France’s National Order of the Legion of Honor. To show her appreciation, Wang’s Fall 2017 film will be “a bit of an ode to Paris.”

DKNY

Given recent shake-ups at its corporate headquarters, for the Fall 2017 season, DKNY is laying low and hosting private appointments in its showroom in lieu of a runway show. On the bright side, Public School founders and erstwhile DKNY creative directors Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow are “taking back” their slot on the official New York Fashion Week calendar. The Public School presentation will take place February 12 at 11:00 a.m. local time.

Band Of Outsiders

Band Of Outsiders is back (yet again), but brand director Daniel Hettmann, designer Angelo Van Mol and the rest of the team won’t be bothering with a Fall 2017 runway presentation. We assume this has something to do with the fact that the brand’s Spring 2017 presentation — under the old guard — was a total flop. In any case, Band’s new band will hold private appointments during New York Fashion Week.

Tom Ford

In the olden days, Tom Ford would present his see-now-buy-now collections to NYFW crowds filled with his top celebrity clients. Now it’s a Los Angeles-based affair. Ford is keeping the details of his upcoming presentation close to the undone-to-the-navel vest, although rumor has it the festivities will align with the Oscars. (In February 2015, the Nocturnal Animals director held a fashion show at Milk Studios on the eve of the awards ceremony.)

It’s impossible to hide from the Hadid sisters this season, as the photogenic siblings continue to score high-profile editorials and ad campaigns. Currently, Bella Hadid is the face of Moschino, Fendi, Zadig & Voltaire and has now been crowned the new face of DKNY for Spring 2017. Photographed by Collier Schorr, Bella stormed the streets of New York City for the shoot, which resulted in a series of vibrant, colorful and intimate photos that are quintessentially DKNY.

IMAGE: HARPERSBAZAAR.CO.UK

Surprisingly, our forum members weren’t too impressed. “I’m bored by Bella. She has such a great model look—a better one than Gigi actually. Still, she’s giving one facial expression and it’s the same as all her Instagram selfies,” ranted an unforgiving TaylorBinque.

“She had four campaigns this season and the only one that was good was Moschino! The other 3 were bad including this one,” added Zposen.

“Not feeling her at all. Not a good model,” expressed pollyanna90.

Sharing the same sentiments was Vitamine W, stating, “She. Can’t. Model.”

Forum member 333101 seemingly felt the same way. “I wish it was Imaan [Hammam],” she described.

GivenchyHomme wasn’t exactly thrilled at the sight of Bella either, asking, “When will it end? We’ve had enough of all of them!”

“Bella aside, a lot of what’s wrong here should be owned up by Collier Schorr as well. Maybe if these shots were zoomed out more they’d be better,” wrote Benn98.

Today in disappointing New York Fashion Week news, DKNY has announced it will be sitting out the spectacle. The homegrown New York brand’s Fall 2017 presentation was originally slated for February 15 at 2 p.m. However, given recent shake-ups at its corporate headquarters, the brand is laying low and hosting private appointments in its showroom in lieu of a runway show.

The fashion set is pretty bummed. DKNY’s streetwise presentations are typically one of the highlights of the season thanks to their Instagram-friendly settings and atypical model castings. (Last season the brand held a dramatic, jumpsuit-heavy show on the High Line; back in 2014, native New Yorkers like “Downtown’s Sweetheart” Vashtie Kola modeled the brand’s Spring 2015 line.)

We can’t say we didn’t see this coming. Donna Karan International has been through a lot this year. LVMH sold the brand to G-III Apparel Group (which also owns Ivanka Trump’s fashion line) early this summer, a move that did not sit well with creative directors Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow or CEO Caroline Brown, all of whom have since parted ways with the brand.

“Given the company sale and subsequent change in strategies, we have decided to step down and focus on our own business Public School,” said Osborne and Chow in a joint statement. Neither they nor Brown have been replaced.

Between DKNY’s retreat to its showroom and Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Comey and Rebecca Minkoff’s flight to L.A., this New York Fashion Week will be markedly different from seasons past. But that could be a great thing, if nascent designers step up to fill the void.

The Hits: Narciso Rodriguez, Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs; Images: Imaxtree and Vogue.com

THE HITS:

Narciso Rodriguez

Narciso has outdone himself again this season, my favorite collection of the week. The sharp cuts, proportion lengths, sunburnt colors in the beginning of the show! Phenomenal. He’s really one of few who can execute minimalism, while still able to keep it exciting and generating new ways to do it!” [TheoG]

“Probably the most consistent designer of NYFW. He’s seriously outdone himself season after season. I enjoy how simple his clothes look but he understands cuts and proportions very well.” [TaylorBinque]

“Impeccable.” [nataliaapple]

See all the looks from the Narciso Rodriguez collection.

Proenza Schouler

Wow. They have to be one of the only brands in NY that consistently produces something high quality, innovative and beautiful! I love it! All of the ties are so cool.” [gossiping]

“Fantastic, as always. Must be the freshest take on Latin/Spanish inspiration in a long time. Love how they made it flirtatious with the ruffles and off-shoulder dresses, and boyish with the suits with the long bow ties. The whole collection had such a rich flow and desirability. NYFW truly begins and ends with these guys.” [Marc10]

“I prefer the end of the collection more than the first looks but I really love it. I’m glad they went back to a more subtle and refined glamour approach instead of the artsy/experimental thing they’ve been doing in the past few seasons.” [Wolkfolk]

See all the looks from the Proenza Schouler collection.

Marc Jacobs

“Absolutely fabulous, as always, Marc! Truly inspirational! Just so many ideas, so many incredible pieces, so much personality, so much joy! This is what I love about fashion. He may not be creating anything so cutting edge, but what Marc does is done with so much conviction and fullness and depth that it is so energizing! He is so important for this industry! He helps keeps it alive and keeps it hot-blooded! I love it.” [dior_couture1245]

“THAT WAS A VERY DECADENT SHOW! Best show of NYFW, one of his best shows ever! The clothes are just fabulous! I LOVE E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.! Even the ugly looks were fabulous! BRAVO MARC!!!!!!!!!” [Lola701]

“I’m not sure if I can fully be unbiased about these clothes – and let me just say that it was very hit-and-miss; the more literal he got, the more he lost me – because this was one of the best fashion shows I’ve had the pleasure of watching. A lovely end to NYFW.” [StoneSkipper]

DKNY is set to bow its Spring 2016 offering next week and it is one of the hottest tickets in town as it will be the very first collection from new creative directors Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow. It will be the culmination of all the changes the label has been going through, heralding a new era for the brand that debuted back in 1989. And this new side of DKNY isn’t going to cater to the kids; Chow and Osborne aren’t looking to dress the DKNY girl. As the pair told WWD, they’re interested in dressing grown women.

“The trajectory for the DKNY girl is that she had been getting younger and younger — and younger,” Chow said. “But it didn’t feel authentic to what the brand was, it was too young; it was just too young for us. The modern woman we envision has just started getting into her own in terms of career, starting a family, her life is multilayered with different dimensions. When you’re young, it’s not as complex. For us, those complexities and those dimensions are the interesting pieces in determining what she wants to wear.”

Also on the list of changes is, naturally, the logo, which will be newly rendered in Franklin Gothic lettering, with two blocks on the side. Of course, we can’t wait to see what Chow and Osborne have dreamed up for this season and what the label will look like under their direction. Something tells us their new vision fro DKNY won’t disappoint.
