Unless you’re Bambi, you’ve got to have a few tricks up your sleeve if you want thick, flawless, so-long-they-must-be-fake eyelashes. From melting clumps to cocktailing your favorite formulas, we’ve rounded up 10 expert tips that will make people wonder what’s got you looking so bright-eyed. Take your lash game to the next level with these eye-opening mascara hacks that we doubt even Twiggy knows about.

Wiggle While You Work

A simple swipe is not enough. Makeup artist Ricky Wilson told ELLE that you should always move the mascara brush in a zigzag motion: “Many women only coat the tips of their lashes which is what I like to call ‘instaclump.’ The tips of the lashes will just stick together. To avoid this, wiggle the brush at the base before extending to the ends.” According to Wilson, getting your wiggle on has an added bonus: “Mascara doubles as faux eyeliner if you wiggle the brush at the lash line to give the illusion of a dense black liner.”

Coat Both Sides of Your Lashes

If you always apply mascara in one direction, you’ve been forgetting half of the job, according to The Beauty Department. The site’s hack for super thick lashes is to coat both sides of your lashes by first looking down and coating the backs of your lashes, then look up and sweep the brush upward from below.

Bend the Brush

It may break your heart to bend the wand on your brand new mascara, but this insider trick from makeup artist Chuck Hezekiah will get you an easy to handle vertical brush that’s better at getting those tiny hairs at the corners of your eyes. Just carefully bend the brush until it’s perpendicular to the handle and bend it back when you’re done.

Fan Out

You’ll be obsessed with this behind-the-scenes look at how makeup artists apply mascara backstage from The Cut. Our takeaway tip is the fan brush method (coating a fan brush with your mascara wand and then using it to paint color on your lashes) to get that no-makeup makeup look.

Give It a Good Soak

You already know that you should change your mascara every three months to avoid raising your own little eye infection-causing bacteria colony, but you may end up with clumpy mascara even if you stick to this expiration date. Minq says you can fix this by dunking the whole tube into a cup of hot water for a few minutes before you use it — the heat will melt clumps and make your mascara more fluid.

Cocktail Your Mascara

Mascara maven Nina Leykind shared this killer tip with ELLE: “To make the most of your lashes, it takes more than one mascara! Call it mascara wardrobing or cocktailing, but it’s the only way to create a bespoke lash look. I have shortish, straight lashes so I always start with a lengthening mascara on my top and bottom lashes before going in with a curling formula to lift and tease out lashes for extra volume and curl. Believe it or not, one mascara doesn’t do it all—and any makeup artist will tell you that using two or three different mascaras makes all the difference to your look.” (As if you need an excuse to buy yourself another mascara.)

Break the Rules

Usually the rule of thumb is to curl then apply, but actress Natasha Lyonne spilled to Vogue that she achieves her famously full lashes by breaking the rules: “I have a very specific system. People are afraid to re-curl their lashes once the mascara is on, but that’s when you get the good action going. And when you think you’re done applying mascara, do another layer. Just never stop applying mascara. [Laughs] I like to do it the way that Blondie or Chrissie Hynde would have put it on—a little nitty-gritty. I even like it to flake. But, really, it’s all about the eyelash curler.”

Erase Mistakes

We all make mistakes, but don’t just try to rub off those skid marks around your eyes with your finger and risk ruining your mascara job. Instead, dip a cotton swab in water and use it to dab away any leftover black marks without messing up your lashes.

Use a Hot Tool

Turn your eyelash curler into a mini curling iron by holding it under the nozzle of a blowdryer for a few seconds just before using it on your lashes. (Test it first to make sure you don’t burn your delicate eyelids!) The heat will help seal in the curl so you can bat your eyes all day.

Reuse Spent Wands

If you really are trading in your mascara every three months like you’re supposed to, you’re probably piling up quite a stash of old wands. But don’t toss them in the mascara graveyard. Instead, the folks at Byrdie suggest that you clean your old wands with your favorite makeup remover and reuse them to separate lashes after applying mascara. Hello, free lash comb!

We all want to see more models we can relate to, a demand the fashion industry is finally starting to respond to with some of the most diverse fashion seasons in history. Though there is still a long way to go until we reach full fashion democracy, theFashionSpot’s diversity reports have charted incremental changes in race, size, age and gender identity representation on runways and the pages of fashion magazines.

But how do these shifts in industry casting standards happen? Social influencers, fashion activists, media watchdogs and consumers all play important roles in bringing more realness into the fashion world, but we often forget how instrumental modeling agencies are in determining the faces of fashion from behind the scenes. Sure, there are the odd Instagram girls plucked from obscurity, but for the most part, the models walking the catwalk at fashion week or starring in designer campaigns are there because they are represented by an agency with the connections to get them seen by casting directors.

“When we started out, we were working with very small, niche brands … it’s amazing to now be working every day with the world’s leading fashion houses, magazines and brands. It’s great how quickly the industry is diversifying!” says Lucy Greene, director of Anti-Agency, one of the small, flourishing new agencies that make diversity a priority. Rather than just getting a few token nonwhite models on the books or relegating a selection of non-sample-size bodies to an “alternative” category, these agencies are dedicating themselves to promoting models who broaden the industry’s definition of beauty on the runways, in magazine editorials and on billboards.

Even labeling them as “alternative,” “niche” or “boutique” agencies furthers the notion that inclusivity in the fashion industry is a novelty. These 12 agencies truly celebrate individuality and are working to change industry norms and stereotypical ideals; they represent diversity not as a publicity stunt or a way for designers to meet quotas, but as a more accurate representation of our world. Because, as Güerxs founder Maria Osado puts it, “Diversity is not alternative, it’s natural.”

When the mercury’s rising, the last thing you want to do is blast your head with a bunch of hot air. Lucky for you, low-maintenance hair has never been (literally) cooler. Even luckier, we’ve got seven tips for air-drying success, so you’ll never end up with a bad hair day.

#1 Start With the Right Cut

If you’re going to air-dry your hair all summer, you’ve got to begin with a low-maintenance hairstyle. Trying to air-dry a fussy cut that usually requires a lot of styling is like hanging a silk, dry clean only dress out to dry on the line. You just can’t expect the same results that you normally get from your round brush and blowdryer or curling iron, so stick with a style that works naturally for your hair. And the next time you go in for a trim, be sure to ask your stylist for a wash-and-wear cut.

#2 Don’t Skip the Conditioner

The secret to perfectly air-dried hair starts in the shower: work in a healthy blob of conditioner to smooth the hair and let it absorb for a few minutes. If you have fine hair and are concerned about limp locks, only apply the conditioner to the ends. If you have thick, coarse or curly hair, don’t be afraid to be heavy-handed with the conditioner near the roots to decrease fluffiness. While you’re still in the shower, detangle from roots to ends with a wide-toothed comb.

#3 Toweling Off Is an Art Form

Resist the urge to vigorously rub your head with a towel to get all the water out, since this roughs up the cuticle, tangles hair and causes major frizz. Instead squeeze and blot hair with an ultra-absorbent microfiber towel (or even a soft, old T-shirt). Don’t twist your hair up in the towel turban-style for the same reason, especially if you want to maintain a natural wave or curl. Practice what curly girls call “plopping” by laying a towel on the ground, flipping your head upside down and plopping your hair on top of it, then roll up the ends of the towel and secure them at the nape of the neck. (There are tons of online videos that can show you how to do this.)

#4 Pick Your Product

Choose a product based on the air-drying results you want. If you have naturally straight hair and want to keep it smooth and silky, apply an anti-humidity serum for frizz control. If you want to emphasize curls, seal them with a lightweight curl cream or leave-in conditioner. If you want your hair to be beachy and textured, spritz in a texturizing spray. Avoid products that will give you that crunchy “wet” look and weigh hair down, like heavy gels and mousses.

#5 Finger-Style

Blowdryer, round brush, curling iron, flat iron…you can count all the heat-styling tools that air-drying will replace on one hand, because all you need for styling an air-dried look is your fingers. To prevent hair from lying flat, lift it away from the roots with your fingers in a zigzag motion to circulate air and help it dry faster. To define curls, use your fingers to twist hair into coils. For loose waves, twist damp hair away from the face into two Princess Leia-style buns and secure with bobby pins while you finish getting dressed and putting on your makeup. Unwrap them just before you leave the house and let them air-dry the rest of the way. For more texture, experiment with letting your hair air-dry in one, two or three braids — depending on the thickness of your hair. (You can also wash your hair at night and sleep in braids or buns to encourage even more texture.)

#6 Blowdry…Just a Little Bit

You don’t have to totally swear off your blowdryer. If you can stand the heat, blowdry just the roots for volume and faster drying, especially if you have very fine hair. If you have thick, curly hair that takes a long time to dry, give it a head start by blasting it with a blowdryer (with the diffuser attachment on, of course). If you have blunt bangs, blowdrying or flat ironing just the bangs will also help to make your air-dried look appear a little more polished.

#7 Go Outside

If you’re tired of waiting around for your hair to dry, harness the power of the sun to help speed things up. Time your washes with outdoor activities or give yourself an excuse to walk to the nearest coffee shop for an iced latte.

If you’re at all into hair, balayage is a term you’ve probably heard thrown around a lot lately. But if you’re having trouble figuring out the difference between balayage, ombre, sombre, babylights and all the other buzzwords that those “every day’s a great hair day” girls are hashtagging their salon chair selfies with, don’t stress.

What is balayage hair?

A little education: Balayage isn’t a specific color or look, but rather the actual technique that stylists use to apply highlights. The name means “paint” or “sweep” in French, so with balayage, the dye is applied to the hair freehand, using vertical strokes and no foil, as if you were painting color onto the hair. This way, the stylist can easily build the level of color from the mid-shaft to the ends so that the results are softer, more natural-looking and grow out without screaming, “I haven’t been to the salon in a while.” And because it’s not really something that non-pros can achieve at home, balayage is head-turning and luxe looking.

What kind of hair works best for balayage?

The method isn’t just used for getting those sun-kissed highlights that have made celebs like Miranda Kerr, Naomie Harris and Sarah Jessica Parker fall in love with it — balayage can also be a little wild. When the technique is combined with mermaid colors, an on-trend galaxy palette or silver granny hair, you get a rich ombre that blends two or three (or five) vibrant hues seamlessly. Plus, because balayage hair color is never harsh, it turns out amazing on all base colors and hair textures.

So whether you’re ready for candy-colored hair or are just experimenting with highlights for the first time, balayage is a versatile choice. To prove it, we’ve rounded up 50 of the most lust-worthy balayage hair color ideas from celebrities, models, hairstylists and Instagram It girls that will make you want to get to the salon stat.

The post How to Be the Most Blissed-Out Traveler appeared first on theFashionSpot.

]]>

We all dream about travel. But as anyone who has seen the words “flight delayed” flashing on a boarding gate or sat next to someone who ate legumes for lunch on a transatlantic flight or ended up on a different continent than their luggage knows, getting to that dream vacation can be a nightmare. A 2014 survey by NBC proved that travel can be stressful when it found that Americans hate air travel as much as they hate standing in line at the DMV.

But if you can’t even with crowded airports, turbulence or those telltale “I just sat in recycled air for nine hours” chapped lips, we’ve got the insider tips to take all of the stress out of traveling. It may take a little extra prep and research (and a surprise upgrade to first class wouldn’t hurt), but you can arrive at your destination rested, serene and ready to embrace the trip of a lifetime. Take a look at these airport hacks to achieve travel bliss.

Take the Road Less Traveled

Travel when everyone else isn’t. The day before major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s (and the Sunday just after when everyone is flying home to go back to work) are the most chaotic at the airport. Sometimes you just gotta be home for the family feast, but if you have a little wiggle room, push back your travel plans by a day or two (or even fly on the holiday itself) to avoid long lines and crowded terminals.

If you’re planning a tropical vacation but don’t want to share the beach with beer pong and bikini contests, another peak travel time to watch out for is mid-March when most colleges go on spring break. Check out spring break charts to find the off-season when you can get those desert island vibes.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of the airports on your planned route. Last year, the world’s most trafficked airports were Atlanta, Beijing and Dubai. If you have to go through a hub, find out if there’s a smaller alternative near your destination; consider subbing Midway Airport for Chicago O’Hare or Oakland Airport for SFO. Got plenty of time? Eschew airports entirely and take the train for more views and legroom. Finally, savvy travelers know that early morning flights on Tuesday through Thursday are not only the least crowded, they’re cheaper and more likely to leave on time.

Breeze Through the Airport With Zen-Like Calm

Bulky checked bags are a huge hassle. First, there’s lugging it through the airport, then waiting to spot your suitcase on the baggage carousel with the excruciating anticipation of it having gotten lost in the ether. So, travel lightly or consider shipping things you won’t need right away to your destination. If you can narrow things down to just a carry-on, you’ll be able to check in for your flight online, get a mobile boarding pass and go straight to the security line. That’s where the stress levels for many travelers reach a boiling point, so use an app like My TSA to check real-time waiting conditions. That way you’ll know how early you need to arrive and can breathe easy even while the guy ahead of you uses five separate trays to empty everything in his pockets.

If you love the idea of being able to sail through security with your shoes on, your belt buckled and your laptop buried in your bag, consider looking into membership to an expedited screening program. Once you’re through the seventh level of hell — we mean the full-body scanner — use apps like GateGuru and LoungeBuddy to navigate unknown airports and quickly locate everything you need to maintain your chill before your flight.

Choose an Airline Based on What You Value

Not every airline is created equal and their track records may surprise you. According to the Air Travel Consumer Report for August 2016, the airlines with the best on-time arrival track records were Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, while Frontier Airlines had the most delays. Hawaiian and Alaska also canceled the least flights and ExpressJet Airlines canceled the most. Virgin America, JetBlue and Alaska won the award for baggage handling, but ExpressJet and Frontier misplaced the most bags.

Luxurious onboard amenities are one way to travel euphoria; first class flyers with American Airlines receive Cole Haan amenity kits stuffed with 3LAB hand cream and C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries toiletries, like lip balm, lime and coriander body lotion and mouthwash. Emirates collaborated with Bulgari to offer leather and satin kits that come with one of the brand’s fragrances. Lufthansa is putting an end to post-flight skin dehydration with humidifiers in first class. Qatar Airways business class passengers brush their teeth with an amenity kit by Giorgio Armani, then snooze on luxurious Frette linens. So do your research when choosing your airline, but if getting a great deal on a flight is your idea of nirvana, prioritize that.

Sit Back and Relax Knowing You Have the Best Seat on the Plane

The Huffington Post recently got the lowdown from flight attendants about which seats are truly the best. If you need peace and quiet, a seat in the front of the cabin is furthest from the roar of the engines — and choose an aisle seat since window seats are significantly louder. If you’re on a red-eye, window seats on the left side of the plane reportedly offer a better space to rest your head because the windows are off-center. If you’re a fearful flyer, soothe your nerves by selecting an aisle seat behind the wings, which are statistically safer. If turbulence stresses you out, pick one of the over-wing seats, which offer the smoothest ride. If you’re concerned about getting your carry-on into the overhead bin, try to get a seat in the back of the plane since most airlines board back to front. If you need to make a quick connection, you want an aisle seat at the front of the plane so that you can get off the plane first. Long legs? Opt for an exit row.

Follow Your Bliss to One of These Relaxing Airports

Think the only way to find serenity in an airport is with an overpriced cocktail? Think again. Lots of international airports now offer designated yoga rooms, many with video tutorials and free mats, blocks and bolsters to enhance your practice. Miami, San Francisco, Heathrow, Chicago Midway and O’Hare, Burlington, Frankfurt, Sioux Falls and Dallas-Fort Worth airports all provide space for practicing airplane pose before you take flight. The Raleigh-Durham and Amsterdam airports also have interfaith meditation centers. If dogs are your spirit animal, head to LAX where passengers can snuggle with a therapy dog through the airport’s PUP (Pets Unstressing Passengers) program. It may not get more blissful, though, than the butterfly and sunflower gardens at Singapore’s Changi Airport. But if music is your escape, there are live performances by local artists seven days a week at the Seattle-Tacoma airport.

Zone Out In-Flight

The relaxation doesn’t have to stop after takeoff. In fact, takeoff usually is the most anxiety-inducing part of air travel for fearful flyers, so Japan’s ANA airline created the Takeoff Mode app, which lets you play absorbing puzzle games to “take your mind off takeoff.” Some airlines now include guided meditations as one of their in-flight entertainment choices, like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic’s partnerships with the popular Headspace app and Delta’s OMG. I Can Meditate! tutorials.

There are plenty of ways to pamper yourself at cruising altitude and ensure that you arrive less stressed than when you left. Bring your own facial sheet mask or soothing gel eye mask. If you want to get some shut-eye, pack an inflatable pillow and don’t rely on those thin airplane blankets. Instead, bring your own cozy pashmina to wrap up in — it can double as an all-purpose shawl while you’re traveling. Make a chill playlist of your favorite mellow songs beforehand and splurge on noise-canceling headphones or even good old earplugs. Catching an airplane bug on the way to your vacation is the opposite of bliss, so stay hydrated, use antibacterial wipes on common surfaces and consider taking a natural sleep aid like melatonin, valerian or chamomile tea to arrive healthy and well rested.

Smooth the Way for Yourself

The best way to avoid travel stress is to not leave anything up in the air at the last moment. Create a pre-trip checklist of all the things you need to do before you go: confirm your bookings, get travel immunizations, find a friend to water your houseplants, refill your prescriptions, set up an “out-of-office” email reply, let your bank know you’re going to be traveling and secure a ride to the airport.

The stress of unfamiliar places and unforeseen circumstances can bring out the demons in even the chillest people, so if you’re traveling in a group — and especially if any of them are your family members — make sure everyone is on the same page before the vacation. Talk about expectations for the trip, lay out a budget and collaborate on itineraries so that you can get at least one group photo with everyone smiling.

Take It Easy

But don’t freak out when things don’t go as planned. No snag has to ruin your vacation in paradise unless you let it. Being blissed out is all about how you see things. Flight delayed? More time to memorize a few phrases in the local language. Lost bag? Take yourself shopping. If all else fails, just repeat to yourself all those cheesy quotes about the real joy being the journey, not the destination.
