When the news dropped of Kristina O’Neill’s departure as editor-in-chief of WSJ. Magazine back in May, we immediately became fearful for the magazine’s future. However, we need not have worried. The publication’s newly-installed editor Sarah Bell has managed to deliver an array of buzz-worthy covers over recent months, which have starred the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Linda Evangelista and Kylie Jenner. WSJ‘s latest cover subject is none other than Angelina Jolie, who features on the magazine’s digital offering for December 2023/January 2024. Fresh from an appearance on American Vogue, the actress, humanitarian and fashion entrepreneur poses for photographer Annemarieke van Drimmelen in a stunning black and white portrait cover image, complete with styling from Tonne Goodman.

Needless to say, member of theFashionSpot forums were impressed. “How gorgeous!” declared PowerDroid the second the cover came to light.

“That’s a stunning cover, that should have been printed,” chimed in mepps.

“What’s up with Angelina getting digital covers now? A big WTF if you ask me. First that missed opportunity with US Vogue for November and now this?” WAVES voiced.

“WSJ. Magazine can just do no wrong, IMO. How heavenly to imagine this level of cover story for American Harper’s Bazaar. I am 100% here for this, flawless from start to finish. First came a high-profile gig with luxury French fashion label Chloé (in collab with the brand’s creative director Gabriela Hearst) and now the American actress and humanitarian is showcasing an Atelier Jolie creation via Vogue’s new digital cover. Reuniting with renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz for the occasion, Jolie tries her hand at a dab of spray painting in the creative cover shot, styled by Tabitha Simmons in an Atelier Jolie gown which incorporates deadstock materials.

Our forums were engulfed in debate from the second the cover came to light. “Wasting Angelina Jolie on a digital cover is actually insane,” commented Marc10.
“Choices. Angelina’s cover should have been the main print cover,” Lola701 echoed.

Nina Garcia continues to keep up ELLE‘s tradition of issues dedicated to women. Now the magazine’s annual Women in Hollywood edition makes a grand return for 2021 following last year’s hiatus in favor of a Kamala Harris cover. This year’s lineup of A-list talent includes Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Lauren Ridloff, Salma Hayek, Rita Moreno, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson, Jodie Comer along with Gal Gadot. The nine actresses each front solo covers complete with styling from Elizabeth Stewart and photography by Greg Williams for the November 2021 offering of ELLE.

Per usual with multiple covers, only a select few stood out. “Angelina doesn’t appear on covers. She blesses them,” heralded Horizontina.

“Only Angelina Jolie’s cover is working and it’s miles better than the other ones,” proclaimed VogueGirl8910.

“Angelina and Jodie for me,” stated kokobombon.

“Angelina is the clear standout for me, as always, and I’ll never complain about seeing Gemma…” declared [Piece Of Me].

“Angelina, Jodie and Gal are my favorites. Shame there isn’t a group shot a la Vanity Fair,” said WAVES.

“This photography is…not good. So amateurish, like what the hell is this lighting? Gemma’s cover is the only decent one,” Marc10 pointed out.

KINGofVERSAILLES was in the same frame of mind: “So they assemble this massive group, a truly impressive lineup of talented and beautiful women…and this is what they come up with? Astounding what passes for cover-worthy photography these days.”

“Not the worst set of covers I’ve come across, but undoubtedly could’ve been better and I detest how incoherent they are alongside one another, especially when only one photographer and stylist are involved,” critiqued vogue28.

Despite Harper’s Bazaar not being the most creative, cutting edge or riveting fashion magazine on newsstands, Glenda Bailey still has some serious pull with the A-list crowd. In 2019 alone, the mag has counted Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Rihanna, Jennifer Aniston, Serena Williams and Demi Moore as Harper’s Bazaar cover stars. Angelina Jolie helps the publication close the chapter on 2019 by returning to the American title for the double December/January edition a little over two years after her last appearance. Photographed by Sølve Sundsbø with Patrick Mackie on styling duties, the actress stars on the newsstand cover (below) wearing a barely visible gold chain Oscar de la Renta dress. For the striking subscribers’ offering (after the jump), Angelina covers up with a white veil.

But our forum members won’t be dashing down to the newsstand anytime soon. “I find the composition and cropping most criminal. How on earth is Glenda Bailey allowed to prosper? And Angelina’s covers are becoming painfully generic. Fail!” Benn98 exclaimed the moment the cover dropped.

“The first cover is just so bad and really unflattering,” echoed Nomar.

“She looks possessed on the cover,” mikel pointed out.

Lola701 wasn’t excited by the outcome, either: “It’s quite terrible! It’s so terrible that it becomes funny!”

“Sølve Sundsbø and team failed to deliver the goods with this one. Yet I can admit the subscribers’ cover is far superior as opposed to the atrocious newsstand alternative! Angelina looks…frozen and static (just like me sitting here in total shock over how bad this all is),” voiced vogue28.

“A softer expression — a hint of a smile — would have gone a long way, but I’ll still take this shot over many of the other covers they’ve produced this year,” reasoned tigerrouge.

Fiercification was one of the few dissenters. “I’m honestly not mad. Her expression is a bit tragic on the cover, but at least there are nice shots in the veil. And thank God she’s not dressed like an executive again, for once!”

Following in their footsteps is none other than Angelina Jolie, fresh from her American ELLE appearance the star now graces the British edition for September 2019. One again captured by photographer Alexi Lubomirski and styled by Elizabeth Stewart, Angelina wears Stella McCartney in the welcoming cover shot.

Our forum members sounded off on their favorite. “U.S. edition for the win,” declared jorgepalomo.

“Too much text, ain’t no one reading all of those cover lines. The U.S. edition’s cover is way better than this, never thought I would say that, but there you go,” called out slayage.

“Colors are too muted and her pout looks forced. I suppose Angelina’s team had a hand in the styling because it’s way too understated for September. And could it look any more like a mid-00s cover of American ELLE if it tried?” wondered an underwhelmed Benn98.

Although not everyone was left unsatisfied. “Quite casual, but I like it,” confessed KissMiss.

In the same frame of mind was vogue28: “Quite fond of this (prefer it to the American edition at least), can appreciate how straight-on the cover shot is and I like the tame styling for a September cover. Almost reminiscent of British Harper’s Bazaar covers, which I’m not mad at.”

The mega star once again photographs beautifully before the lens of Alexi Lubomirski looking radiant in Christian Dior for the warm and inviting cover shot styled by Elizabeth Stewart.

The cover was a hit with our forum members. “This is beautiful. I’m not a huge fan of Alexi, but this is a complete yes. Another issue of ELLE to add to my collection,” shared jorgepalomo the moment the cover dropped.

GivenchyHomme was also a fan. “It’s good. It’s how she looks now. It’s definitely a reflection of how she’s changed over the years. She’s not that sexual edgy woman anymore, she’s grown-up. My one critique is that they went overboard on the retouching, especially on her forehead.”
