Throughout 2023, Anna Wintour has kept us on our toes in terms of cover subjects, and has switched up her usual favorites in favor of some surprise cover stars which have included Erykah Badu, Olivia Rodrigo and the supermodels of the 90s. Despite the sprinkling of old faves like Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie and Carey Mulligan over the past two months, Wintour is closing out the year on a high as she welcomes Nicki Minaj as the American fashion bible’s December 2023 cover star – taking us by complete surprise. The best-selling female rapper of all time appears before the lens of photographer Norman Jean Roy, for what is her first American Vogue cover appearance, with stylist Max Ortega dressing Minaj in a look from Valentino’s Fall 2023 haute couture collection.

Members of theFashionSpot forums were left speechless – well, almost speechless. “I’m aghast,” Lucas Almeida exclaimed the moment the cover struck.

“SHE ATE!” JPineapple raved in sheer delight.

“Oh my god! What a cover, what a moment. Stunning! I can forgive and forget a year’s worth of awful covers thanks to this beauty. A timeless, classic American cover,” aracic heralded.

“FINALLY! I think it’s a well-deserved cover and the result is gorgeous,” applauded WAVES.

MON was left in the same frame of mind upon checking out the cover, commenting: “I am over the moon! This looks regal and glorious! I cannot stop fawning over this cover! Quintessential US Vogue!”

“A real beautiful and glamorous cover to round out 2023 for American Vogue. I am 100% here for the surprise of seeing Minaj as Vogue‘s cover star, and it’s an added bonus that the outcome is so easy on the eye. I love the warmth, the coloring, the sense of glamour… it’s all working,” vogue28 approved.

2022 Met Gala

After skipping 2020 and scaling back a bit in 2021, we expected the 2022 Met Gala to really bring the drama. Not to mention the fashion. Thankfully, we aren’t disappointed.

Continuing the theme of “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” there was plenty of gilded glamour. There were corsets, structured skirts and opera gloves galore. But there were several stars who either downright ignored the theme or tried to put a modern spin on it. For example, Janelle Monáe’s Ralph Lauren look was a futuristic interpretation.

We spotted a surprising amount of cut-out accents. We were also taken aback by the sheer volume of see-through sections. (See what we did there?) Kim Kardashian certainly turned heads decked out in Marilyn Monroe’s iconic Jean Louis dress.

Both Blake Lively and Sydney Sweeney did an outfit reveal on the red carpet. The former rocked two Atelier Versace creations that paid tribute to the Statue of Liberty. The latter transformed her Tory Burch gown into a minidress.

Suits were also popular. Cara Delevingne, Irina Shayk and Chloë Grace Moretz all stepped out in striking style. It was actually a welcome contrast to all the dynamic dresses.

It’s definitely worth your time to scroll down to see all the crazy, sexy and totally cool looks from the 2022 Met Gala.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 06: Lady Gaga attends The 2019 Met Gala Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 06, 2019 in New York City. (Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue)

With this year’s Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, we expected stars to bring the crazy drama. And boy, did they deliver on the OTT front. From Lady Gaga going through several wardrobe changes — all on the pink carpet, no less — to Zendaya’s light up Cinderella dress to Katy Perry looking pretty lit, it was go big or go home.

And it wasn’t just the clothes stealing all the thunder. Ciara won for biggest and baddest hair of the night, while Hailey Bieber went with an old-fashioned ‘do and props to Tessa Thompson for working her extra long braid like a whip. Plus, the guys really came to play, even when it came to makeup. (Kudos to Darren Criss for his daring eye makeup.) We must give a special shout-out to Billy Porter, whose Cleopatra-like entrance almost upstaged Gaga’s performance. Almost.

Vogue Japan February 2019 : Nicki Minaj by Mariano VivancoIs there something going on over at Vogue Japan HQ that we’re unaware of? The staff suddenly seems to have a fascination with…celebrities. Recent cover stars include Elle Fanning back in November and Tilda Swinton just last month and now, the magazine gives us Nicki Minaj for February 2019. Photographed by Mariano Vivanco, the cover marks her second Vogue cover appearance overall (Vogue Arabia gave Nicki her first back in September). The Trinidadian-American rapper sports auburn hair and a head-to-toe look from Riccardo Tisci’s debut Burberry collection, styled by Anna Trevelyan.

The cover certainly took our forum members by surprise. “All I see is Lil’ Kim,” pointed out liv4beauty the moment the cover came to light. “Is this a Lil’ Kim tribute?” asked TaylorBinque, also noticing some similarities. “This looks very brazen and gaudy which in theory should be perfect for VJ, but normally reserve that sort of thing for their inside content and keep the covers simple. There’s something off here though. I think the stylist tried too hard to edge up Burberry,” said Benn98.

“Tilda Swinton by Lindbergh one month, Nicki Minaj by Vivanco the next… who exactly is their target audience? For me the cover looks like something Terry Richardson would have done. It all just looks a bit tacky,” disapproved 333101. Lola701 couldn’t believe her eyes either, pointing out: “That wig is horrible! A mess, a real mess.” “Why didn’t they just get Lil Kim for the cover? Everything here is a big miss,” echoed mepps. Also unimpressed was forum member burbuja8910: “The cover looks very cheap and tacky, I mean these photoshoots are appropriate for men’s magazines like Maxim or even GQ, but not Vogue!” “I don’t mind this Nicki Minaj as Lil’ Kim bit at all. I’m sure it’s done on purpose and it’s kind of hilarious, although I find the cover too cluttered,” commented dodencebt. Dear Vogue Japan, please give us our model fix next month along with photographers Luigi & Iango. Check out the contents and share your thoughts on Nicki’s new Vogue cover here.

Diesel’s Star-Studded Campaign Turns Hate Comments Into Fashion https://www.thefashionspot.com/fashion-news/804613-diesel-hate-couture/ https://www.thefashionspot.com/fashion-news/804613-diesel-hate-couture/#respond Thu, 20 Sep 2018 18:27:02 +0000 http://www.thefashionspot.com/?p=804613 It's called Hate Couture.

Italian apparel company Diesel recently released a badass collection that capitalizes on hate comments by converting them into fashion statements.

The company’s creative agency Publicis Italy released a star-studded anti-cyber-bullying ad campaign that features stars such as Nicki Minaj, Barbie Ferreira and Bella Thorne wearing pieces from the collection — aptly dubbed “Haute Couture” — emblazoned with hate-driven words that the stars actually received online.

“Hate comments are based on the fact that people are hiding themselves,” chief executive of Publics Italy Bruno Bertelli told Campaign. “The main thing is not to hide. […] If you keep [hate] inside, it grows and hurts and becomes bigger and bigger.”

Last week, a similar campaign attempt by Revolve focusing on body-shaming flopped because of an early release and faulty advertising. Revolve has since apologized for the incident, saying the intention was not to promote body-shaming but to empower women. After all, “The more hate you wear, the less you care,” Diesel’s ad says.

The “Haute Couture” set will be available on October 6 in 42 stores worldwide. Customers can customize their own pieces and turn those insults into mere accessories. Diesel will donate some of the proceeds to Only The Brave Foundation, which supports anti-bullying and cyberbullying programs in different countries around the world.

Glitzy dresses and see-through gowns were both trending at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards with varying levels of success. Stars like Jennifer Lopez, Karlie Kloss and Olivia Munn shined in sparkling pieces, while Tiffany Haddish, Shanina Shaik and Rita Ora played a little peekaboo. Black and white reigned supreme, but color still found its way to the red pink carpet with one dynamic dress filling the quota all on its own. The beauty looks were also noteworthy with exaggerated eyeshadow, a bounty of bangs and eye-catching red lips.

Vogue Arabia September 2018 : Nicki Minaj by Emma SummertonIt’s almost hard to believe Nicki Minaj has never been on the cover of Vogue before, but leave it to a diverse and risk-taking magazine like Vogue Arabia to be the first to feature the Trinidadian-American rapper. We guess it’s better late than never as Nicki scores the title’s September 2018 issue, fronting two covers photographed by Emma Summerton and styled by Anna Katsanis. Following her July American ELLE cover, Minaj stands confident and strong in cover one (below) wearing a dramatic Christian Siriano creation, while in the alternative cover (after the jump) she makes a Marc Jacobs look her own.

The covers left our forums divided. “Vogue Arabia has some of the best covers and content! This is beautiful, I love it!” praised Blayne266 upon checking out the covers. “Nicki’s first Vogue cover and I am in love, well done Vogue Arabia,” applauded TeeVanity. “Proud of Vogue Arabia! They’ve been killing their covers this year,” raved an ecstatic bella753.

Also pretty excited was forum member ghostwriter10549. “I fuc*ing LOVE THIS. It’s perfect for Vogue Arabia, for Nicki, for this industry, for September, for this year! It’s been a long time that a celebrity cover makes so much sense in many ways and it’s just not an obvious PR gig,” he voiced. Unfortunately, not everyone was here for it. “So Nicki Minaj is a style icon now? Last time I checked, she was singing Swallow and shaking her naked butt. Well done, Vogue,” snarked Srdjan. “Why would anyone in their right mind give this awful woman a Vogue cover? And they wonder why Condé Nast is in the red. They are doing a wonderful job chasing away their core readership,” ranted Les_Sucettes. “I was excited to see this, as the pairing of Nicki and Vogue Arabia sounded too surreal to me but the results are disappointing. She doesn’t even look like herself,” Royal-Galliano pointed out.

US Elle July 2018 : Nicki Minaj by Karl Lagerfeld

Nina Garcia continues to overhaul US ELLE and following a beautiful Kendall Jenner cover last month, the editor-in-chief wastes no time getting the big names to front the magazine by securing Nicki Minaj for the July 2018 issue. “Reclaiming her throne” in the music industry and on the cover of ELLE, Minaj was photographed by Karl Lagerfeld in his Paris-based studio. In the vibrant newsstand cover image (below), Nicki wears a colorful embellished Versace number and is even joined by The Kaiser himself throughout the accompanying cover story.

Not only has Minaj received Lagerfeld’s endorsement, but she also gets the seal of approval from (the majority of) our forum members this month. “Wow, striking! This will definitely draw attention at the newsstands. The lightly softened look and faint smile looks refreshing. Don’t listen to her music, but one can’t deny she’s rather beautiful and ELLE did her justice here!” exclaimed Benn98.

“This really works, what a truly refreshing cover,” Miss Dalloway said.

“Wow, I was expecting something really bad but Karl surprised me with this one. I like it!” Scotty added.

T-rex agreed, writing, “I love the cover, it looks like a good one from the 80s!”

“Very retro cover, I love it,” Wintergreen agreed.

“Surprisingly simple but effective,” shared lelaid.

Of course, the cover didn’t cater to everyone’s taste. “Can’t think of a worse combination. That picture of Minaj and Karl is probably the epitome of everything I find aesthetically repulsive in fashion. It’s like they are lifeless. I can’t see that the trend surgically constructed women shows no signs of abating,” fumed Les_Sucettes.

Srdjan also wasn’t a fan: “I’m aware of the world we are living in, but really? And it’s not just Minaj, but it’s her and Karl and everything about it.”

There were definitely some consistent themes at this year’s epic Met Gala. With the party celebrating the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination exhibit, attendees offered their penance in the form of veils, crosses and headpieces galore. Yellows, reds and golds also proved popular for this secular celebration. As is usually the case, a few stars took things to the extreme. Rihanna transformed herself into a pope, Zendaya channeled Joan of Arc, Katy Perry looked like she was auditioning for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and Madonna reteamed with Jean Paul Gaultier for a more solemn spin.
