I’ve been doing a lot of shopping lately because, well, inflation. I’ve been telling myself that at some point I may need to trade Gucci for food if money continues to become seemingly “worthless.” Plus, designers have been hiking prices non-stop so really I’m “investing.” My husband, however, tells me this isn’t what people mean when they say “investing.”

Nevertheless, I have to somehow justify the fact that I spend $300-plus on a Gucci mug so, potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto.

OK, so I’m no Warren Buffet, but there’s no denying that the fall runways were full of investment-worthy pieces – whether or not you agree with the exact definition of that term! These are pieces you will wear this season and for many, many to come.

Here’s a look at some stunning fall fashion pieces.

The temperatures have started to rise these past few days, making layering a thing of the past. And warmer temps aren’t the only good news: Japanese brand Uniqlo is leaving its Heattech technology behind this season in exchange for its breathable fabric AIRism — and designer Alexander Wang is in on this release, too.

The AIRism collection features light base layers and promises to release heat and moisture to adapt to any weather condition. Wang teased the new offerings on his Instagram with campaign photos and videos that featured men and women in high-waisted underwear and a sports bra.

Alexander Wang x Uniqlo will feature pieces such as midriff long-sleeved tops, camis, biker shorts and leggings. Like most of Uniqlo’s clothes, the Alexander Wang x Uniqlo collection will include sleek options in colors such as black, white, nude and some pastels.

“It was easier coming together this time around to accomplish a similar goal from various touch-points,” Wang said in a statement released by Uniqlo. “Innovation has always been at the forefront of our design and creative process, and functionality serves a huge purpose in the way I and our customers dress. Therefore, through the influence of innovation, technology, and functionality, the special AIRism collection was born.”

Get your credit cards at the ready, because Alexander Wang x Uniqlo will be available online and in stores just in time for spring on April 11.

Yesterday, LVMH announced its list of eight finalists for the prestigious LVMH Prize. This year’s list of finalists is the most diverse the competition has ever seen, with finalists hailing from countries such as Israel, Nigeria, and South Africa.

What makes this list of finalists even more astounding is how they incorporate environmental ethics into their designs. Delphine Arnault, the executive vice president of Louis Vuitton and founder of the Prize, pointed out a few finalists in particular who focus on sustainability: “This was the case at Phipps, with Spencer Phipps’s fabric sourcing and his informed approach to the environment. Or for instance with Bethany Williams, who is committed to aiding minorities through her involvement in fashion,” she said to Vogue.

The LVMH Prize was created to celebrate and support young fashion designers around the world. One young designer will be chosen to claim the coveted award. The winner of The Young Fashion Designer Prize will have a grant of 300,000 euros (approx. $340,000 USD) and personalized technical and financial support from LVMH for a 12-month period.

Some of the most renowned personalities and designers of the fashion world will judge the eight finalists — namely, J.W. Anderson (creative director of  Loewe), Kris Van Assche (creative director of Berluti), Maria Grazia Chiuri (creative director of Dior), Nicolas Ghesquière (creative director of Louis Vuitton), Marc Jacobs, Clare Waight Keller (creative director of Givenchy), Delphine Arnault (executive vice president of Louis Vuitton), Jean-Paul Claverie (advisor to Bernard Arnault), Sidney Toledano (chairman and chief executive officer of LVMH) and Humberto Leon & Carol Lim (creative directors of Kenzo). Winners will be announced in June. While you wait for the announcement, check out these promising designers on Instagram.

Sustainable fashion is so much more than just a movement; more and more brands are leaning towards an ethical approach to creations for the long-term. And some are zeroing in on one of our most precious and beloved natural resources: the oceans.

From Londre to Solgaard, a number of fashion labels from all over the world are coming up with incredible strategies to save the oceans and keep them free from waste. Strategies like using recycled shells and joining hands with researchers and scientists show that these brands are not playing around when it comes to keeping the sea clean.

By the time a designer makes it to icon status, they’ve usually racked up decades of runway shows and their creations have graced a multitude of red carpets. But how did they get there? Your favorite designers developed a sense of style just like everyone else — through their own trial and error over many years.

And nowhere is this better displayed than on Instagram, where a new account is chronicling everything the iconic Miuccia Prada has worn over the years. It is no wonder that the designer who has changed the face of luxury fashion has had quite a sartorial journey herself.

Every one of Miuccia’s fashion statements has shifted the narrative of fashion in some way. Be it her fox fur boa or her beloved pleated skirts, Miuccia is the original haute couture influencer. So, it’s no surprise that a page named What Miuccia Wore has acquired more than 7,000 followers. Here are our favorite moments from this stroll through Miuccia’s fashion history.

‘Sincere chic’ is what Miuccia had written in her program notes about the 1999 Fall/Winter collection. Fashion chroniclers will tell you that the last Prada show of the last millennium ushered in the empowered comfort fashion for the working girl, which is now prevalent in the label’s creations. Miuccia’s pleated leather skirt is the very definition of that aesthetic.

For its Spring/Summer 2010 Ready-to-Wear line, Prada decided to feature monochrome florals and slinky leather. Miuccia effortlessly rocks a sleeveless shift dress from the line paired with her trusty fox fur striped boa.

If you’re just discovering the tiara as an everyday accessory, know that Miuccia Prada is the mother of the wearable statement that is now taking global runways by storm. Here, the designer pairs a dramatic tiara with her fashion go-to, the pleated skirt.

Prada’s romance with the fringe was solidified when Miuccia stepped out for the 2018 Met Gala in this flashing neon number, which upholds Prada’s no-holds-barred dedication to daily wear drama.

After Raf Simons left his position as the creative officer of Calvin Klein in December, it’s been stormy waters for the iconic brand. In December, it announced plans to close the flagship store in New York at 654 Madison Avenue. In January, about 100 employees were let go and in February, after 25 years of showing at New York Fashion Week, the American brand was a no-show at the Fall 2019 shows. Now, there’s news that Calvin Klein has decided not to continue its high-end designer collection business, which had been renamed CalvinKlein205W39NYC under Simons. As a result, more layoffs are expected, including 50 employees in the New York office and 50 in the Milan office. The brand has also decided to close its Milan office altogether.

A spokesperson for Calvin Klein told WWD last month amid rumors, “We can confirm that there is a collective dismissal procedure in place for some departments of the Calvin Klein Milan office. The company is working to try to minimize the social impact of this procedure. We know it is a difficult time, but we trust in the cooperation of all of those involved to find appropriate solutions for the impacted associates.”

Despite these disheartening changes, Calvin Klein is actively looking for a fashion director to lead the remaining brand categories. We look forward to seeing the reinvention of the Calvin Klein brand — in whatever form that ultimately takes.

Net-a-Porter scouts the top talent then works with these designers to nurture the new brands by providing mentoring and marketing support. It’s called The Vanguard. Can you imagine running a fashion brand in high school? That’s just what designer and founder of Gigi C, Gigi Caruso, is doing. In fact, we spoke with her between final exams. In a day and age when everything seems to be controlled by Amazon, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as speaking with designers who may not be old enough to drink or even vote, but are running budding empires with designs already sold at retailers like Carbon38 (seems like just yesterday they were a baby) and editorial features in The New York Times.

Young fashion entrepreneurs are players in every part of the fashion game. Alexandre Daillance’s line NasaSeasons is a simple selection of tees and hats, but he already has a celebrity following that includes Wiz Khalifa, Rita Ora and Rihanna. Frankies Bikinis designer Francesca Aiello is already a Miami Fashion Week Swim vet. While most people were busy choosing classes and voting for Prom King and Queen, these kids were building their businesses from the ground up.

Learn more about these precocious entrepreneurs in our slideshow above.
