It’s universally known that if you want to be a model, you’ve got to be tall. For a lot of us, 5’9″ is a pretty good height, but in the fashion industry, that’s on the shorter side for a model. That doesn’t mean, however, that girls who aren’t blessed with longer legs can’t still have successful careers. In fact, there are plenty of women who have proved that, although they might not stand as tall as most models, they can still make it–like these 17 top models, all of whom are under 5’9″:

1. Lily-Rose Depp

Lily-Rose Depp may only be 5’3″, but she looms large in Karl Lagerfeld’s mind. The Chanel muse has walked many a tweed-filled runway (Haute Couture Spring 2017, Pre-Fall 2017, Haute Couture Fall 2015) and starred in various beauty and eyewear campaigns for the brand. Depp has already graced a fair number of magazine covers, among them Jalouse, LOVE, V Magazine, Vogue Paris, British Vogue, ELLE France, ELLE Greece and Vanity Fair France. We suppose she has her equally petite, preternaturally beautiful mom to thank.

2. Lottie Moss

Much like her big sister Kate Moss, Lottie Moss has risen within the industry despite being (somewhat) vertically challenged. (Needless to say, the family affiliation didn’t hurt.) The 5’6″ British beauty has fronted campaigns for Topshop, Chanel, Bulgari and RED Valentino. She’s walked the runways of Sonia Rykiel, Topshop Unique and Chanel and graced a handful of covers, the most notable being Vogue Paris’ May 2016 edition, which she shared with fellow genetically #blessed millennial Lucky Blue Smith.

3. Hailey Bieber

Instagirl Hailey Bieber is one of the most visible models of our time thanks (in part) to the 5’7″ blonde’s close friendship with the Jenner and Hadid sisters – and being married to Justin Bieber. Nevertheless, the IMG signee — who’s walked for the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Jeremy Scott, Prabal Gurung, Elie Saab, Tory Burch, Off-White, Zadig & Voltaire and Tommy Hilfiger — has more than earned her stripes. She has fronted campaigns for Guess, Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Jeans, Calvin Klein, Versace, Miu Miu, UGG. In June 2022, the American beauty unveiled Rhode – a line of efficacious, intentional skincare essentials.

4. Sofia Richie Grainge

Sofia Richie Grainge (daughter of Lionel Richie) is successfully forged her own identity in the modeling industry and now considered a style icon. The 5’6″, beauty has fronted Complex, Wonderland, Town & Country, walked the runways of Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Yeezy and Philipp Plein and appeared in the pages of W, V Magazine, Vogue Japan and Seventeen, among others. 

5. Adwoa Aboah

Freckle-faced Ghanaian-British beauty Adwoa Aboah is a force to be reckoned with. The 5’8″ 24-year-old is a Vogue (and Vogue.com) favorite thanks to her fresh, rebellious personal style. Not that she needed the validation. Aboah has walked nearly every runway of note (Miu Miu, Chanel, Christian Dior, Fenty x Puma, Versace, Fendi, Moschino, Marc Jacobs, Kenzo) and starred in countless high-profile campaigns (Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Sephora). In 2017, Aboah jumped to the silver screen as Ghost in the Shell’s Lia.

6. Rose Bertram

Rose Bertram, a 5’7″ bombshell known for her curly mane and killer curves, is a favorite of Sports Illustrated, LOVE, H&M and Jeremy Scott. The IMG signee and Instagirl on the rise has also worked with beauty giant L’Oréal Paris and luxury lingerie retailer Agent Provocateur, among others.

7. Sara Sampaio

As far as Victoria’s Secret Angels go, 5’8″ Sara Sampaio is a bit on the “short” side. Still, Portugal’s most photogenic export is a mainstay on the international catwalks. In 2017, she’s strutted Balmain, Mugler, Elie Saab, Alberta Ferretti, Baja East, Marchesa, Tory Burch, Prabal Gurung and Tommy Hilfiger. Her list of recent campaign appearances is almost as long-winded — Moroccanoil, Victoria’s Secret, Blumarine, Hogan… Oh, and she’s already got Vogue, LOVE and Editorialist features under her belt.  

8. Emily Ratajkowski

You’ve definitely had an eyeful of 5’7″ Emily Ratajkowski — you’ll remember her from 2013’s controversial “Blurred Lines” music video and 2014’s movie adaptation of Gone Girl. But Ratajkowski’s a model first. Her formidable CV includes a turn on Miu Miu’s Fall 2016 runway, a spot in Marc Jacobs’ sprawling Spring 2016 ad campaign and stints on the covers of CR Fashion Book, GQ Spain and British Vogue. Oh, and she’s a firm fave of Donatella Versace.

9. Marisa Miller

Marisa Miller would be a babe no matter her height, which is 5’8″, to be exact. The American fashion model is known best for looking scrumptious in Sports Illustrated and for Victoria’s Secret.

10. Kate Moss

Kate Moss is an industry icon, which is amazing, considering shes’ only 5’7″. But her keen modeling abilities and dangerous, cool-girl vibe we all wish we had have turned her into one of the most successful faces in the world. 

11. Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne‘s height has been reported to be anywhere between 5’7″ and 5’8″. One thing’s for sure, she’s definitely not traditional runway height. Her agent once tried to get her cast in Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2012 show, but she was cut when Marc Jacobs asked, “Why is that dwarf in there?”

12. Devon Aoki

Devon Aoki is one of the shortest high fashion models out there, and has enjoyed a lot of success through her career. In the late 90s, she became the face of Versace and also posed for Chanel, Kenzo, Moschino, Fendi and many more. How tall is she? Just 5’5″.

13. Camille Rowe

Camille Rowe has landed campaigns with Chloé, Aldo, Dior Homme, H&M and more, as well as multiple covers of ELLE France. She’s also posed for Victoria’s Secret at only 5’7″. Not bad for a “short” girl, right?

14. Lila Moss

After posing alongside her model mother Kate Moss on Vogue Italia’s July 2016 edition, it was only a matter of time before Lila Moss reached superstardom. At 5’3″, Lila has secured campaigns for a whole multitude of fashion houses including Ermanno Scervino, Versace, Marc Jacobs and appeared on the magazine covers of British Vogue, Vogue Japan and Vanity Fair Italia to name a select few.

15. Liberty Ross

Liberty Ross‘ 5’6″ frame certainly was not a problem for Burberry, Emanuel Ungaro or Jimmy Choo–they all chose her to front their campaigns. 

16. Lydia Hearst

While it helps that your family is one of the most powerful in the publishing industry when you’re trying to start a modeling career, Lydia Hearst has had a lot of success–not because of her name. She’s landed campaigns for Juicy Couture, Pringle of Scotland, Swarovski and more. Not to mention the sizeable amount of print work she’s done for international versions of Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle and more. The 5’7″ Hearst has been so successful, that she was chosen to be a mentor for season 2 of Naomi Campbell’s modeling reality competition, The Face.

17. Laetitia Casta

Laetitia Casta has had a tremendously successful career in spite of her 5’6″ height. The credits are as far as the eye can see: A contract with L’Oréal Paris, a stint as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, covers of Vogue, ELLE, i-D as well as jobs modeling for Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Roberto Cavalli, Vivienne Westwood and countless others.

Make no mistake that Lily-Rose Depp is a Chanel brand ambassador and the ink was barely dry on the dotted line before the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp was appearing before the lens of the late Karl Lagerfeld in the French fashion house’s Fall 2015 eyewear campaign. Eight years and multiple campaigns later, the French-American actress is handpicked by Chanel’s creative director Virginie Viard to be the face of the Coco Neige collection for 2023. Shot by Mikael Jansson, Lily takes to the ice rink throughout the series of campaign images and bundles up in Viard’s latest drop which makes us want the hit the slopes – and the rink.

The end result, however, left a whole lot to be desired in the eyes of our forum members. “Chanel for H&M at best,” laughed an underwhelmed DK92.
“I thought Gucci travel [with Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny] was bad!” Urban Stylin shrieked.
“LOL, isn’t Margot Robbie an ambassador? She would’ve been the best person for this I, Tonya non-sense,” mentioned thiago.
Lola701 wasn’t feeling the end result either, commenting: “It seems like Karl’s first and only Coco Neige campaign [with Margot Robbie] will be the best ever for this line. And there wasn’t even any snow in that campaign. This Lily-Rose campaign is a mess.”
“Admittedly, this isn’t my most favorite of times I’ve seen Lily-Rose Depp as the face of Chanel but I do love that photograph of Lily on the ice rink, in the navy jumpsuit. The rest of the campaign is awful, looks like something you’d see coming out of Nylon. Not impressed… for a brand like Chanel,” echoed vogue28.

Chanel continue to make use of their contract with Lily-Rose Depp, who first signed on the dotted line with the storied French fashion house back in 2015 – the youngest ever at age 16. Eight years later and the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp has appeared in adverting campaigns for just about every product the brand produces, including ready-to-wear, handbags, eyewear and fragrance.

Depp’s latest task as Chanel ambassador is fronting the new Première Édition Originale watch campaign. The elegant timepiece is a reissue of the first ever Chanel watch, intended to be worn like a piece of fine jewelry.

The emerald-cut beveled crystal rests on a black-lacquer dial with no numerals. Golden hands turn on the perfectly smooth surface. The crown, set with an onyx cabochon, reflects 2 signature colors of the House: black and gold.

Directed and photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Lily can be found throughout the advertising campaign and accompanying video roaming Gabrielle Chanel’s decadent and lavish apartment at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris, and it simply doesn’t get more chic (or quintessential Chanel) than that!

Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin remain Virginie Viard’s campaign photographers of choice at Chanel. The creative director continues to rely on the Dutch photographic duo to deliver her vision via the brand’s various ads. For the creative twosome’s ninth Chanel installment, the pair shines a spotlight on the French fashion house’s new handbag creation for 2022 aptly entitled 22. The campaign transports us to three different locations with Lily-Rose Depp captured in Los Angeles, Whitney Peak photographed in New York City and Margaret Qualley in Palm Springs.

The campaign failed to impress our forum members. “OMG this is BAD,” declared dior_couture1245.

“Chanel, you better wake up honey. You’re not looking so hot,” noted GivenchyHomme.

“Boy that’s an ugly bag,” critiqued SLFC.

“Ugly campaign to complement an ugly bag. I cannot believe this is from Chanel. Like girl, how desperate you are,” added TaylorBinque.

Frederic01 isn’t buying it, either. “Chanel clearly doesn’t want to cater to a sophisticated clientele. Virginie made that clear when she took over: her designs cater to the lowest of the low in terms of taste hence the plethora of logos all over the clothes…”

“Margaret Qualley’s photos are quite beautiful, love the lighting and how effortless she looks. Not a fan of the three locations/three ambassadors concept, but I’ve seen worse. The pool setting for Lily-Rose Depp looks absolutely idyllic and love Whitney in that tweed jacket!” voiced vogue28.

We’re all well aware that Lily-Rose Depp is affiliated with Chanel. Since 2015 she’s appeared in the French fashion house’s eyewear campaigns and mainline ads (alongside Cara Delevingne), worn Chanel on countless magazines covers (even posing with Karl Lagerfeld on Vogue Paris) and became the face of the brand’s N°5 L’Eau scent. So we aren’t surprised to see the young model starring in Chanel’s Cruise 2021 campaign captured posing around the grounds of a Mediterranean villa by Karim Sadli.

“It’s Chanel x H&M?” wondered an unimpressed thatsfierce.

“It all looks so cheap,” proclaimed Ghesquiere32.

“One word: cheap,” echoed helmutnotdead.

“They look like cheap Chanel imitations. Lily-Rose looks great, but cheap-looking clothes are cheap-looking clothes no matter who is wearing them,” voiced GivenchyHomme.

But not everyone felt the same way. “I think Lily-Rose fits Chanel and looks great in it… She has a combination of both French chic and Los Angeles cool, which fits the essence of the modern Chanel woman,” said Overindulgence.

Lola701 was also a fan: “I think the campaign is good. Good photography and it’s slightly uplifting.”

“I love it, think the concept of the campaign and the choice to cast Lily-Rose Depp capture the spirit of Virginie Viard’s collection perfectly — and the sight of a sun-drenched swimming pool is pretty much exactly what I’m craving right now,” raved vogue28.

This year the BAFTA Awards tried to go green, even on the red carpet. The reportedly carbon-neutral award show even distributed a sustainable fashion guide to attendees. A few did comply, most notably Kate Middleton who recycled the Alexander McQueen dress she donned for a 2012 official dinner. (Not surprising since the duchess is known for getting the most out of her gowns.)

There were plenty of black dresses at the ceremony and a decent amount of voluminous silhouettes. But there were pops of bright color, including fuchsia, yellow, red and pink.

With this year’s Camp: Notes on Fashion theme, we expected stars to bring the crazy drama. And boy, did they deliver on the OTT front. From Lady Gaga going through several wardrobe changes — all on the pink carpet, no less — to Zendaya’s light up Cinderella dress to Katy Perry looking pretty lit, it was go big or go home.

And it wasn’t just the clothes stealing all the thunder. Ciara won for biggest and baddest hair of the night, while Hailey Bieber went with an old-fashioned ‘do and props to Tessa Thompson for working her extra long braid like a whip. Plus, the guys really came to play, even when it came to makeup. (Kudos to Darren Criss for his daring eye makeup.) We must give a special shout-out to Billy Porter, whose Cleopatra-like entrance almost upstaged Gaga’s performance. Almost.

Over the years, Lily-Rose Depp has failed to impress our picky forum members on just about every major fashion magazine including British Vogue, Vogue Paris, Vogue Japan, CR Fashion Book and, most recently, Vogue Russia. It’s now Vogue Korea’s turn to feature the Chanel brand ambassador on its September 2018 edition. The magazine has been riding a wave of success lately, winning us over with covers starring Luna Bijl and Grace Elizabeth, but its latest is a step backward. The Karl Lagerfeld favorite wears Chanel (natch) and plays the role of both devil (below) and angel (after the jump) on two covers, photographed by Paolo Roversi.

Members of our forums weren’t expecting much. “I can’t believe Lily keeps getting Vogue covers, let alone a September cover. Both covers are boring,” wrote gunsnroses.

“Why is she still getting covers?” asked anlabe32.

“This is disappointing for September,” agreed mathiaskatz.

Also left unimpressed by the magazine this month was 333101: “She looks half dead on both. I usually love VK and Paolo but this is pretty bad!”

“Her eyes are always dead,” said forum member Your Anchor.

“Can someone wake her up? She’s falling asleep,” TaylorBinque laughed.

EstefaniaAbaddon wasn’t a fan, either. “These are the worst pictures I have ever seen coming out of Paolo’s work. What happened? He has the power to say no, why let this see the light of day? This is a stain on his work! This girl is a disgrace for any cover she’s on and they have to stop trying to make her happen. Let her be a teen,” he stated.
