How often do you see a pic of a celeb looking like a hot mess and wonder how, with all of the stylists, designers, makeup artists, and Hunger Games-style prep teams behind this girl, did this happen? We do it a lot. That’s why we’ve created a game where we get to reimagine celeb style snafus—if only we were their stylists.

Baillon is back, this time joined by best friend Julissa Bermudez, for a show chronicling the ladies’ luck with boys, jobs, and the city that doesn’t sleep. Between Baillon’s Cheetah Girls days and the on-air flair Julissa sports on 106 & Park, it’s no surprise these ladies are dressed to the nines throughout each and every episode.

Julie Bensman: Congrats on the show’s success! Give us the scoop…

Julissa Bermudez: The show is something we thought would be a breath of fresh air in an oversaturated market like Reality TV. We like to think of ourselves (as Adrienne likes to say) as ‘Feel Good TV’ because we’re not afraid to be silly, crazy, emotional, etc.

Adrienne Bailon: Juli and I have been best friends for almost ten years now and have gone through SO much together — from career ups and downs to old and new boyfriends (or currently lack thereof!). We call ourselves the Latina Laverne & Shirley…crazy and hilarious things are always happening in our lives. For a while, the ongoing joke was, ‘Where are the cameras?!’

JB: What do you love about filming in NYC?

AB: It’s home! There is NOTHING like coming home. So many memories…

JB: …and the infectious energy! The vibe is contagious. Plus, they do say if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere (fingers crossed). We’re definitely in an Empire State of mind.

JB: How do you think your heritage plays into your sense of style?

JB: I think my style is a little more vibrant and sassy because of my upbringing. I was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Queens, so my Caribbean influence along with my urban Queens setting adds a unique flair to my style.

AB: I love being Latina and I love being feminine… I love feeling sexy! I refer to my style as Cha-Cha Queen.

JB: How would you describe each other’s style?

AB: Juli is bohemian/classic chic!
She loves effortless pieces yet always looks like a classic timeless beauty.

JB: Adrienne is tough girl, edgy with a chic twist. I love that she’s unpredictable — she’ll rock something that most wouldn’t even think of putting together and make it work in a cool, funky way.

JB: Who are some of your own favorite designers?

AB: Alexander Wang, McQueen, and Zac Posen…and anything from Topshop!

JB: I love classic designers like my DR native Oscar de la Renta, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana because they fit women with curves amazingly. I also love Carven, Opening Ceremony, and Balmain (if money were no object!).

JB: What/who inspires you?

JB: Strong independent women like Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Ripa, and Tyra Banks.

AB: LIFE! The good and the bad… My mood and feelings inspire me…getting dressed is always a reflection of how I feel!

Check out Empire Girls on The Style Network, Sundays at 9-10 PM EST.

Xoxo,

Julie

How to Rock (and Ruin!) Pearls and Headbands https://www.thefashionspot.com/beauty/168335-how-to-rock-and-ruin-pearls-and-headbands/ https://www.thefashionspot.com/beauty/168335-how-to-rock-and-ruin-pearls-and-headbands/#respond Thu, 04 Aug 2011 14:55:00 +0000 http://www.thefashionspot.com/2011/08/how-to-rock-and-ruin-pearls-and-headbands/ This week we take a look at celebs spotted wearing headbands and hair pearls. Do you think they rocked it?

Last week we began tackling some big beauty questions, namely whether or not hair accessories can work and if so, how to use them tastefully. When it comes to flowers, we recommended keeping them toward the back of your head; on the subject of hair sequins we suggested using hair clips covered in sparkle; but for hair feathers? The jury’s still out (check out how “How to Rock (and Ruin!) Hair Accessories” to join the great feather debate).

This week we take a look at celebs spotted wearing headbands and hair pearls. Do you think they rocked it?

The Headband

From Blaire Waldorf to Nicole Richie, headbands in various shapes and sizes have melted the hearts of so many women. It’s hard to botch a headband, but we really loved what Mila Kunis did with her hair at the Moscow Friends with Benefits premiere. The actress wore a punk-y headband made of three silver chains, balancing out her ballerina-eque outfit perfectly.

On the other hand, Mischa Barton, who wears hippy headbands as part of her signature look, managed to ruin her outfit. She simply overdid it at a recent red carpet event it, with an overly chunky purple headband to match her grey dress.

The Verdict: Headbands work on just about everyone; it’s just a matter of choosing the one that flatters your ’do the most. We suggest keeping headbands thin, on top of your head as opposed to your forehead, and choosing bands bold enough to be a sexy accessory (not an addition to a schoolgirl’s uniform).

The Pearl

Pearls in your hair aren’t just for brides anymore; these classic beads have a way of adding a really spicy, feminine addition to most updos. Adrienne Bailon kept it classy by wrapping a plain pearl beaded necklace around her messy-chic ’do—hello Greek goddess! The ever-so-stunning Eva Longoria went in a different direction, wearing pearls alongside rhinestones in her small hair comb. The combination of sparkle and pearl worked on her, but that’s probably only because she’s, well, Eva Longoria and she can look good in anything.

The Verdict: Pearls are timeless regardless of how you wear them and have a way of making you feel like Audrey Hepburn in no time. We prefer allowing pearls to sit alone in your hair: let their elegant simplicity do the talking and don’t overdo it by adding rhinestones.

Get your claws out ladies, because the latest trend in manicures is dagger nails. Also referred to as stiletto nails, the edgy trend has been spotted in a range of hues on celebrity fingertips this spring.

When Blake Lively debuted her new auburn locks at the Time Magazine 100th Issue Event in NYC, she also showed off dagger nails in a pale peach. Adrienne Bailon rocked a similar nail look recently in Beverly Hills. How she manages to text with those nails is a mystery!

Jessie J is a huge fan of the dagger manicure, and sports the tough look in black on the cover of her album Who You Are. In the video for her song What’s My Name, Rihanna‘s bright yellow dagger nails stand out against her black and white striped blazer.

For her appearance on Good Morning America, Lady Gaga dressed as a human condom to talk about safe sex. We’re not entirely sure how her gray dagger nails fit the concept, but they definitely made a statement. Katy Perry is known for her wacky manicures, so it’s to be expected that she’d start sporting dagger nails. In fact, she took it to new lengths with these unwieldy gold talons.

Thinking of trying the look yourself? Rihanna’s manicurist, Kimmie Kyees, recently told InStyle that “long, pointy nails elongate fingers, making them look nice and slender.” Her one requirement? “You have to be fearless!”
