Staged within the decadent interiors of the historic Hôtel de Maisons, Pierpaolo Piccioli declared black is the new ‘PP Pink‘ with the unveiling of Valentino’s Fall 2024 collection, having served up an all-black lineup on day seven of Paris Fashion Week. Often renowned and celebrated for his mastery of vivid color, Piccioli took a bold departure this season by embracing an exclusively black palette for a collection aptly titled “Le Noir”. The Italian fashion designer who has been the solo creative force behind Valentino since 2016, fixated upon the romantic and ultra-feminine codes of the iconic Italian fashion house this season, focusing on rosettes, ruffles, lace and intricate embroidery detailing as opposed to color.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Pink, blue, black. Doesn’t he get bored with the co lour shtick?” [LadyJunon]

“Funeral march. I’m ready for him to move on.” [Salvatore]

“Autopilot.” [yslforever]

“There’s something very ‘early 2010s pre-collection’ about this and honestly I’m not mad at it. Boring and unoriginal, but it at least looks pretty luxe and isn’t as aesthetically ghastly as some of Pierpaolo’s recent offerings.” [Steddycam91]

“Beautiful, but boring beyond belief. It’s clearly product-driven because it’s basically soulless.” [GoldenPetals]

“It’s good, but not great. Certainly one of his best RTW shows. Of course it’s incomparable to couture, but a major improvement. I will say that it did not have to be all black. Something about that shows uncertainty. He used the black as a security blanket. Some of these pieces would have been better in color.” [GivenchyHomme]

“For a Brand that has such a great approach to color and print combinations, I find it very depressing and I miss both elements a lot. The evening ear is beautiful though!” [Kite]

“It’s an exquisite, elegant and luxurious collection. I think that’s what Maison Valentino has always been about so for me this presentation was definitely an achievement. There’s nothing new but we can see an interesting play with shapes, lengths and fabrics. all the lace looked sumptuous! Also, I absolutely love all-black outfits and looks so this was personally, a treat.” [WAVES]

“J’adore! Beeeeaaautiful garments, great casting and everything looked expensive!” [Ihhbl]

“Those black patent 80’s pump! Heavenly! I didn’t expect much from him but it was such a nice surprise. A very beautiful collection! It was insanely glamorous, diverse and grown up. That’s what I’m looking for!
I really love the wardrobe approach and there are some exquisite pieces. Bravo PPP!” [Lola701]

Pierpaolo Piccioli is sticking to his guns for the Spring 2024 season, enlisting the all-American beauty and firm industry fave that is Kaia Gerber as the face of Valentino for a second consecutive season. Piccioli, nonetheless, throws in Valentino brand ambassadors Jolin Tsai and Son Ye-jin for good measure. The creative director who has been the solo creative force behind Valentino since 2016, drops legendary photographer Steven Meisel for the Spring 2024 season, in favor of Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. The photographic duo capture Piccioli’s trio of muses high above New York City, on location within the 7 World Trade Center building, with the city’s graphic skyline making for a majestic and visually-arresting backdrop.

“Great so far,” admired GERGIN upon checking out Valentino’s latest.

“Love the photography and styling. So much better than last season’s dreadfulness,” MModa voiced.

“Big fan of this campaign! Eye-catching and captures the perfect mood,” noted Faith Akiyama.

Yet not everyone was left so enchanted with the end result. “I hate how photographers don’t even care that their work looks no different from a 5-minute smartphone filter job. It’s the opposite of glamorous. Where’s the uniqueness? The exclusivity? GoldenPetals asked.

“It’s all very disjointed, despite the same location and same clothes,” chimed in upNorth.

Everyone loves a flashback, right? Here at theFashionSpot, ahead of us descending upon each fashion capital, we’ve been flashing it back a whole decade to the Fall 2014 season of New York, London, Milan and now Paris Fashion Week.

Just like in the other cities, the fashion landscape was a whole lot different within the French capital. Raf Simons was the creative force behind Christian Dior, Hedi Slimane was heading up Saint Laurent, Riccardo Tisci was still proving every inch his worth at Givenchy and Alexander Wang presented his third mainline collection for Balenciaga while the much-loved Phoebe Philo was still winning us over at Celine.

John Galliano’s eponymous label was a fixture on the PFW schedule (designed by Bill Gaytten), as was Haider Ackermann whose collection showcased the strength of the Colombian-born French designer’s innate design talent and impeccable skill. Anthony Vaccarello’s very own namesake creations were on full display too. The Fall 2014 season also bestowed upon us the late Karl Lagerfeld’s unforgettable supermarket spectacle at Chanel and Sarah Burton’s Alexander McQueen collection felt like a magical and mythological fairytale was coming to life before our very eyes.

Take the March 2011 cover of British Vogue, the January 2015 cover of Harper’s Bazaar Australia and the June 2019 covers of British Harper’s Bazaar as prime examples. Vogue Turkey is the latest to endorse Rosie as cover girl, welcoming the British beauty onto the cover of its Icon supplement for February 2024. The muse of Pierpaolo Piccioli wears a monochromatic Valentino number in the undeniably flawless cover portrait, selected for the occasion by stylist Sandy Armeni, complete with photographer Emre Unal taking the shot.

Also just as equally as enchanted by Vogue Turkey’s latest was oaklee91, commenting: “Just lovely. So soft and ethereal. Adore!”

“Rosie looks gorgeous, it’s a stunning portrait. Can’t believe her last Vogue cover was 8 years ago. I must say I’ve really enjoyed Vogue Turkey’s casting recently and welcome more beauties like Rosie and Constance [Jablonski] who can deliver solid glamour,” raved marsnoop2.

Vogue28 voiced: “Gorgeous! Always love me some Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and we don’t see her enough (especially on the British fashion glossies), so the sight of this is very much welcome. The cover shot itself is flawless, just a straight-up beautiful and direct cover image that commands your attention. Not one complaint from me…”

The Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week collections came to an almighty end last night, subsequent to John Galliano staging his applause-inducing Maison Margiela Artisanal showcase spectacular, which was truly something the fashion crowned hasn’t witnessed for some time. Boating insane storytelling, drama and theatrics – Galliano’s Dior is truly well and truly alive at Margiela.

Flashback to Monday and it was Daniel Roseberry at Schiaparelli kick-starting the couture celebrations, reminding his A-list audience of the power of fashion. As Roseberry dug even deeper into the rich and surrealist Schiaparelli DNA, models were decked out in the designer’s hi-tech couture looks of XL shoulders, dramatic bodices – often covered in micro chips and old cell phones. At Christian Dior, guests digested Maria Grazia Chiuri’s take on classic Dior shapes heralding the essence of femininity with new interpretations of A-line skirts, cocktail dresses and the iconic bar jacket, shown inside a set envisioned by artist Isabella Ducrot. Balloon, draped and bow dresses were taken to the extreme at Giambattista Valli while ethereal tulle, bows, pinks and tweed were on the agenda at Virginie Viard’s ballerina-inspired Chanel showcase.

This season marked 19 years since Giorgio Armani first debuted his Privé collection, with the king of Italian fashion putting his ateliers to work to present a collection full of exquisite fabrics and sophisticated glamour. Simone Rocha, as guest-designer of Jean Paul Gaultier this season, paid homage to the codes of the house: corsetry. The Irish designer brought her folkloric romanticism to JPG couture with Rocha’s signature shades of blush, red and black scattered throughout. At Viktor & Rolf, never expecting the unexpected, models walked the runway in a black and nude uniform of distressed and deconstructed creations. Titled ‘Le Salon’, Pierpaolo Piccioli’s latest couture collection for Valentino was an ode to the essence of haute couture itself – but with a modern twist of masterful color-blocking. From glistening suits to crystal-encrusted accessories, Kim Jones at Fendi married futurism with Karl Lagerfeld’s vision for the luxury Italian fashion house.

“Most of this looks awkward and difficult to wear.” [Alquimista]

“The fabrics are so stiff and heavy, they are on the verge of cardboard. The oversized blazers are a tired trend.” [yslforever]

“I absolutely loathe Pierpaolo Piccioli’s work. He started out so strong solo at the house, but he very quickly ended up in this particular rut that he refuses to get out of. Personally, I find his use if color garish. I do not think he is a master colorist. I also find it really obvious how lazy the actual design work is. Most of what he puts out now for couture is like a big, boxy, solid, 2-dimensional oversized item like a car coat and it’s so basic and there’s no detail work to speak of. So boring. So cheap.” [lookatme]

“This is Haute Couture! There’s an allure and the quality of those fabrics screams at you in a way that quiet luxury couldn’t! Armani put that atelier to work!” [Lola701]

“This is a masterclass on how to be a couturier. The perfect cut and finish, the restrained excess, the contrast between melancholic and lady like, the use of the right fabric and the perfect fit. These are pieces that will be worn for years.” [Urban Stylin]

“I sat and watched the live-stream in absolute awe! Absolutely flawless from start to finish, and another collection in which cements Giorgio Armani a cut above the rest. So many delightful creations here, and so many sublime details and fabrics. The fluid metallic fabric Armani uses is heavenly. Ugh, I could rave about this collection until the cows come home…” [vogue28]

“It’s such a coma-inducing show. The collection itself is so bland that there’s literally nothing to talk about.” [perhydrol]

“Why is Jones’ Fendi so American in its sensibility? This could be Isaac Mizrahi couture. It lacks that sense of fun and humor both Karl’s and Sylvia’s collections had. It’s very textbook couture, overly precious and too serious for an Italian brand.” [avonlea002]

“Aseptic and lank. Kim just doesn’t work well at Fendi. There’s no fun and joy in this at all, just boredom. Very inoffensive so it’ll cater itself well to the mindlessness of the ‘fash pack’ and all the ‘journalists’, but where’s the actual soul?” [Cocteau Stone]

“Extremely cheap and unimaginative.” [lookatme]

“It’s just so frou frou. Half looks like like an audition for Dior, the other half a Gaultier Pinterest board. This just isn’t interesting or challenging. Simone Rocha should’ve looked at his mid-90s and early-00s collections a little more. The whole cone bra and corset sh*t is getting stale fast.” [gallianostan]

“The white tights are a poor choice. They’re so unflattering and even though the proportions of these looks are better than her usual outputs, it’s still so lackluster. Not an ounce of joy or fun to be had, let alone movement, which is the premise of Coco’s design beginning.” [Cocteau Stone]

“The magic of RVDK unfortunately died when he started to have shows. I remember those magnificent lookbooks, super edited but also very strong! RVDK is a seasoned designer and so, it’s a pity to see the kind of collections we have to attach to his name. Nothing is working here. And neither the casting or the presentation are helping his case!” [Lola701]

“It’s just so synthetic and calculated. There isn’t really that much of a shift happening, and the mood board seems like a very obvious one from start to finish. Feels incredibly conceited.” [Cocteau Stone]

“He had a really strong moment for a year or so, but now it’s getting a little bit tiresome. If he were to expand his color palette, that would make a big difference. He can’t continue to produce only black, white, and gold. The archive are rich in color. He needs to confront whatever fear he has towards color because the house DNA isn’t solely black and white.” [GivenchyHomme]

“It kind of feels like Daniel Roseberry is running out of steam.” [TerraVera]

“Daaaamn. Galliano is truly back in business. It’s DISTINCTLY Galliano, but with that gritty Margiela touch.” [GoldenPetals]

“FINALLY! Drama, theater, excess, darkness, whatever. I don’t care about Margiela, I want to see Galliano like in his glory days. I’m glad to see his confidence is back, and to finally own his aesthetic at full.” [FelipeV]

“I was absolutely moved to tears, we haven’t seen or experienced anything like this in eons. And, God, is fashion hungry for this. This almost feels like a swansong collection, or at least a culmination of the narrative he’s been weaving these last few years. I’m just lost for any intelligent words right now.” [Mr-Dale]

That’s a wrap on Menswear Paris Fashion Week‘s Fall 2024 season, and the festivities have been an absolute whirlwind since Pharrell Williams kick-started the fashion frenzy with his Wild West-inspired collection for Louis Vuitton, where his posse of cowboys helped redefine the American West. The first Givenchy collection post-Matthew M. Williams saw the brand invite guests inside the historic salons of 3 Avenue George V, where Founder Hubert de Givenchy crafted his creations in the late 50s until his retirement in 1995. The showcase setting proved to be the ultimate location to unveil the collection, with the in-house design team having been inspired by Monsieur Givenchy himself when compiling the 34-look collection. A dramatic soundtrack of Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev filled Kim Jones’ Dior Men showcase, as Jones introduced his fist full line of menswear haute couture. Balmain returned to the PFW schedule for the first time since 2020, to which Olivier Rousteing collaborated with artist Prince Gyasi to compose a collection of bright colors, polka dots and pop art-esque motifs which harked back to the 80s. Following a season in Milan, Pierpaolo Piccioli brought Valentino’s menswear offering back to Paris for the Fall 2024 season, using a specific shade of blue as his starting point and to declare the tie as the pièce de résistance of the season.

Look no further for an unfiltered take on Menswear Paris Fashion Week’s Fall 2024 season. Check out the hits and misses, all in accordance with theFashionSpot’s forum members:

HIT | Dries Van Noten

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024

“I f*cking SCREAMED. Chic, polished, superb, wearable, fashionable, sleek, sexy, daring, and I could continue for a long time. All the rest can go home!” [helmutnotdead]

“This might be the only brand thus far this menswear season where I would wear everything!” [notfatgoddess]

“Hands down the best men’s collection. Dries really is the best designer in Paris now, if not in fashion. The clothes are just sublime, such handsome and cinematic menswear.” [disco54]

MISS | Acne Studios

“I’m beyond lost. What happened to this brand?” [Lola701]

“I feel that Johnny Johansson thinks he’s ahead of the curve but he’s been left way behind.” [youthinasia]

“Painful to look at. Acne went from Scandinavian cool to wannabe streetwear Palm Angels this season.” [IloveDiorHomme]

MISS | Wales Bonner

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | IMAXTREE

“I didn’t know thrift shops were allowed to show in Paris menswear schedule…” [jeanclaude]

“Confused as to what the intention is here. It’s all just a bit stylistically haphazard in order to cater to a wider audience, which leads this to feeling like an insincere output. Why is that crushed satin dress in here? The boots with Bermuda length shorts? Everything is at odds with each other so none of it really meshes together well.” [Cocteau Stone]

“Unfortunately, this collection just confirms my doubts regarding her work. It’s still very beautiful, beautifully made, approachable but still no identity.” [Lola701]

HIT | Junya Watanabe

“YESSS! The Junya Watanabe that I love. No more punk sh*t.” [Kanzai]

“I willl always have a soft spot for Junya! I find this quite ambitious but still very much desirable and relatable. This is the first time in a long time that I see him doing such ambitious outerwear!” [Lola701]

MISS | Rick Owens

“Beautiful! I’m crying.” [Kanzai]

“ALL HAIL THE KING! The first stanza of the collection (1st nine looks) was perfect. Then what followed was pretty much on par with what we’ve been accustomed to by Yohji Yamamoto. The casting was incredible! Yamamoto is on the same level as Armani for me, pretty much untouchable.” [WAVES]

HIT | Homme Plissé Issey Miyake

“The silhouettes speak for themselves. this is what happens when you focus on cutting and draping instead of costume and gimmicks. Good clothes.” [gallianostan]

MISS | Louis Vuitton

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | IMAXTREE

“Tacky. Pharrell should’ve just stuck to music. These tired singers/rappers/whatever should really stop venturing into fashion when their careers get stale.” [notfatgoddess]

“There is something very unauthentic and costume-y about this. It feels very much like he just texted the team: ‘hey let’s do a cowboys and Indians theme’ devoid of any of the cultural references or understanding what it actually means. Not that every collection needs to be deep and nuanced and referenced well but it feels very hollow and empty.” [Yasouss]

“My jaw dropped at seeing this! What a horrible, ill fitting pile of absolute sh** clothes. I thought Virgil Abloh couldn’t design but in comparison to Pharrell he was a couture god.” [90sFan]

MISS | Givenchy

“The models faces says it all.” [tourbillions]

“Jesus, there is not a single drop of masculinity here. So unsexy.” [Alquimista]

“This is what happens when there’s no designer in sight. And the designer that just left was mediocre. And the stylist they hired to style the show is untalented to the max.” [90sFan]

MISS | Dior Men

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | IMAXTREE

“Imagine having all the budget in the world to offer absolutely nothing…” [Wolkfolk]

“The shorts, socks and ballet flat situation is tragic.” [LadyJunon]

“With all that drama, that insane budget and those grand gestures, you would expect a fitting collection…And of course we got the opposite. There’s one thing that I hate in menswear, and it’s seeing unrelatable, undesirable clothes only created for pure Drama purpose. Nobody looks good in Dior Men. Nobody will buy those pieces. Nobody is believing in this!” [Lola701]

MISS | Loewe

“This isn’t for me and seems like a miss, also feels a bit like his own line, which isn’t bad, but this is Loewe.” [Yasouss]

“Love Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe but this was not it for me. From the clothes to the color palette, to the set, to the models, nothing worked for me this time.” [Ihhbl]

“This show makes me want to take another shower. The whole thing feels so seedy. I miss Jonathan Anderson’s 2015-19 era. Those were his best collections.” [LadyJunon]

HIT | Hermès

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | VOGUE

“Chic and elegant and wearable – that’s all I need!” [Olaffo]

“Always love Veronique Nichanian’s work! Always masculine and so ‘low luxury’. I love Hermès’ menswear and this is exactly what I want for from a luxury brand…” [Kerg]

“A truly beautiful menswear collection, just as I have come to expect from Hermès. The styling is lovely, and the fabrics are just screaming luxury, which for me reads quintessential Hermès. A massive fan of the color palette too. Easily one of my highlights of PFW!” [vogue28]

HIT | Balmain

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | IMAXTREE

“I really much prefer his menswear than womenswear! This is so good.” [tourbillions]

“I do have a soft spot for Olivier because I know he loves what he does and you can see it through the clothes. I am happy with what I see even though he can be a bit literal. I love how he finds the right balance between the stunts and fashion itself.” [thiago]

“This is actually a great collection. I think it was somehow chic, much more subtle than usual and quite multi-layered. I saw some French surrealism but also Les Zazous mixed with eastern African influences but also Les Sapeurs from Congo in the flamboyance of the mix of colors.” [Lola701]

MISS | Valentino

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | IMAXTREE

“That’s one straight- to-the-outlet shade of blue. I don’t think that Hotel Particulier was the best set to show menswear and there was a lack of energy and rhythm in the show itself. The color thing needs to stop. The collection needed a dynamic print or motif, not another tired color theme.” [Lola701]

“Where I have seen those fringe panels before? Pierpaolo Piccioli copied Phoebe Philo so literally! Shein-level of design.” [jeanclaude]

“The only good thing about this show was seeing Jeremy Young on the runway.” [Thefrenchy]

HIT | Paul Smith

The Hits & Misses of Menswear Paris Fashion Week Fall 2024
IMAGE | IMAXTREE

“OMG very Dries, I love it! I always adore the Paul Smith brand to be fair, their recent collections have been pretty solid.” [Kanzai]

“These are the pants that I wish Dries showed…a roomier cut, but not excessively billowing and baggy. I can’t complain about this. Sure, Sir Paul’s not really a part of the fashion conversation these days, but his clothes are wearable, practical, stylish..enough, and safe (which isn’t a four-letter word). And, his stuff won’t break the bank, either. He gets my admiration… 100%.” [engenius]

The Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week Spring 2024 season is upon us and as the fashion pack flock (or remain in Paris amid Menswear Paris Fashion Week) to the French capital to bare witness to the collections. In honor of the upcoming collections, we are at theFashionSpot are flashing it back a whole decade to the Spring 2014 season.

To say the world of fashion has changed dramatically within the past 10 years would be an understatement. Still on the schedule back in Spring 214 was the outright splendor and fabulosity of an Atelier Versace presentation. Donatella Versace welcomed guests inside The Ritz hotel and presented a collection which was an ode to Grace Jones. Raf Simons was creative director at Christian Dior, still on his mission to modernize couture, with his collection boasting inspiration of the work of French sculptor Valentine Schlegel. Maria Grazia Chiuri was still at Valentino alongside her co-creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, where their love of the opera was on full display. Viktor & Rolf cast the Dutch National Ballet as models while Jean Paul Gaultier invited burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese to walk his couture extravaganza. Elsewhere during the season, the titan of Italian fashion that is Giorgio Armani gave us an absolute masterclass in refined elegance, evoking the gypsy spirit of Loulou de la Falaise and couture sneakers were high on Karl Lagerfeld’s agenda at Chanel.

Ever since Emmanuelle Alt made the bold and impactful statement of championing Valentina Sampaio as a Vogue Paris cover girl back in 2017, Sampaio’s body of work has gone from strength to strength. Vogue Brazil soon gave up its front cover to the Brazilian beauty for December 2017 and welcomes Sampaio back once again with the unveiling of the January 2024 edition. Six years after her last cover appearance, the first transgender model to become the face of American lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret poses across three dreamy and delightful covers, via the lens of Mariana Maltoni. Captured amongst nature, both down on an idyllic beach and deep in the forest, Valentina is dressed by stylist Rita Lazzarotti in looks from Valentino, Prada and Giorgio Armani.

“I love seeing Valentina Sampaio on a cover,” heralded tigerrouge.

“Carré Otis, is that you?” asked kokobombon.

“I love that you’ve mentioned Carré Otis because I’m now unable to see it – and I love that!” responded vogue28. “The first cover is utterly gorgeous, love the beach setting, the styling, the little glimmer of Emmanuelle Alt’s Vogue Paris and those shades of blue!”

“Very Carré Otis for sure on the first one, a bit of Brooke Shields as well,” noted Bertrando3.

“I love the first cover! Finally, I will buy another Vogue Brazil after Gisele Bündchen last year,” shared forum member caioherrero.

WAVES chimed in: “The third cover is the best one and she looks beautiful. A good start to 2024 for Vogue Brazil!”
