D la Repubblica continues to stomp on the competition and show just about every major fashion magazine on the planet how it’s done. We currently remain in the midst and the glory that is ‘The Fashion Issue’. Following on from Volume #1 which resulted in us here at theFashionSpot hyperventilating over 21 spectacular covers, Volume #2 is evidently no different. Emanuele Farneti dials down the number of covers, to give us a selection of three. Cover one sees Farneti call upon Paolo Roversi, who captures Penelope Ternes, Lina Zhang, Amar Akway and Yar Aguer. Colin Dodgson photographs Jesi Shelnutt for cover two while Ida Heiner serves retro glam on cover three, as she poses for photographer Theo Sion.

Models on the covers of fashion magazines will forever be a cause for celebration here on theFashionSpot, even more so as every major glossy unveils their offerings for the upcoming fall season. Make no mistake that V Magazine‘s Stephen Gan has a tendency to deliver the goods when it comes to selecting models as V‘s cover stars, and throughout last year alone we became witness to a whole plethora of top models including Gigi Hadid (on two separate occasions), Gisele Bündchen while Adut Akech and Imaan Hammam (amongst others) graced V‘s Winter 2022 edition which closed out the year on a high.
The cutting-edge fashion title’s issue for Fall 2023 is an outright celebration of the faces who rule the runways, as Hailey Bieber, América González, Amar Akway, Lulu Tenney, Raquel Zimmermann, Vivienne Rohner, Margaux Lion, Amelia Gray and Rachel Marx pose on a mammoth ten covers for the celebratory moment, each captured by photographic duo Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinnodh Matadin and styled by Paul Sinclaire.

Per usual with a multi-cover selection, members of our forums were quick to select their favorite. “The Hailey Bieber cover looks great! Very glamorous. Best I’ve seen from her,” raved thiago.
In complete agreement was heyjaded: “Honestly, Hailey’s cover is the best!”
“I like the cover, it’s very strong 80s power woman,” chimed in Urban Stylin.
“You know you need to rethink things when a Hailey Bieber cover is the standout from a group of 10,” laughed KINGofVERSAILLES.
“My favorite cover by a long shot is Hailey Bieber’s, which is giving me all sorts of Helmut Newton/Studio 54/80s power woman vibes and I’m loving for it. Amar Awkay’s is second, which is just gorgeous and then I do like Vivienne Rohner’s cover,” vogue28 voiced.
Mikel wrote: “I can’t help but absolutely love Raquel’s cover!”

If you’re like us, you’ve no doubt been fawning over every last detail of the Versace x Fendi collaboration, which Donatella Versace and Kim Jones unveiled during Milan Fashion Week back in September. The wait for the highly-anticipated advertising campaign to accompany the marvelous Fendace collection is finally over and true to speculation, Steven Meisel was commissioned to capture this iconic collab. The Pre-Fall 2022 ads feature an impressive lineup of models: Anok Yai, Adut Akech, Naomi Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Amar Akway, Lina Zhang, Anja Rubik and Kristen McMenamy.

The end result failed to excite most of our forum members, however. “Looks like H&M or something. Steven waste-of-money Meisel,” said MagFan.

“Versace for H&M part two,” echoed DK92.

“They look overly Photoshopped and kind of CGI. This is not good,” critiqued Scotty.

“Wow, this looks horrible! Feels like Skims by Meisel. Same level of cheapness. Absolutely tragic,” proclaimed thiago:).

“It just looks like a glorified backstage shoot…it’s even more depressing that this is what we’ve come to in terms of visual art,” stated GERGIN.

“Hideous, the clothes seriously look like 10-dollar knockoffs you would find on a street corner in Los Angeles. The photography looks perfect for the windows of a tacky hair salon nearby,” voiced YohjiAddict.

“What a letdown…” added guimon.

But not everyone agreed. “This may not be the most brilliant or visually stunning campaign Meisel’s ever done, but I absolutely love it and I’ll always show support for Meisel! Great casting…” approved aracic.

We’ve now experienced 11 glorious seasons of Steven Meisel shooting Zara’s mainline advertising campaigns. Five years later with the partnership stronger than ever, we continue to be left in awe season after season. For Spring 2022, Meisel bestows upon us a new artistic concept starring a bevy of models each resembling painted figures. This season the lineup includes Marie Sophie Wilson, Lina Zhang, Georgia Palmer, Jessica Stam, Tess McMillan, Rianne Van Rompaey, Edie Campbell, Quinn Mora and Amar Akway posing solo for portraits that are true works of art.

Needless to say, the campaign received rave reviews from our forum members. “Marie Sophie Wilson looks stunning…” proclaimed mikel.

“What a stellar lineup! And of course, an absolutely magnificent portrait of Marie. So elegant, so soft, such beautiful tones. Steven Meisel and Baron have successfully elevated Zara to the levels of high fashion and above, visually at least. Their presentations never fail to impress me!” exclaimed aracic.

“This is even more exciting than Chanel ads nowadays,” balmain1914 pointed out.

“Stunning campaign, I love the painting effect as a reference in every ad,” admired VogueGirl8910.

“Quite a stunning series of images and this feels like a vast departure from previous Zara campaigns lensed by Meisel, which I can appreciate. The portraits themselves are all gorgeous, couldn’t possibly select a fave…” admitted vogue28.

Steven Meisel is back as Moschino’s campaign photographer following a brief hiatus last season when Marcus Mam photographed drag queens Gigi Goode and Symone. It would be an understatement to say Meisel and Jeremy Scott have been a match made in heaven. Moschino Spring 2022 is no different. Imaan Hammam, Mika Schneider, Gigi Hadid, Amar Akway and Abby Champion come together with legendary stylist Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele dressing the models in Scott’s fabulously kitsch and baby-inspired collection.

Needless to say, members of our forums were left in awe. “Gosh, Imaan is just incredible. I love this, she looks fantastic. Moschino x Meisel is always a hit for me!” declared LastNight.

Month after month, Edward Enninful propels British Vogue to new heights. The publication continues to break new ground down at newsstands. Now the magazine celebrates models of African descent with a pair of bold and powerful February 2022 covers. Adut Akech, Anok Yai, Majesty Amare, Amar Akway, Janet Jumbo, Maty Fall, Nyagua Ruea, Abény Nhial and Akon Changkou appear before the lens of Rafael Pavarotti.

The covers ignited debate across our forums. “Oh, what a beauty the first cover is! The group shot isn’t that impressive…” voiced slayage.

“I like Adut’s solo cover. I like the pose very sultry and regal… Edward should’ve just stopped at that because the group cover does absolutely nothing,” noted THD96.

“Adut Akech’s solo cover was the only cover required here because the image itself is just so incredibly bold and powerful…” echoed vogue28.

“I’m all for an epic group shot with women of color. But when everything is dark nothing stands out,” critiqued mikel.

“I like the group shot, but it’s not as impactful — I feel they could have arranged the models in a better way…” LastNight pointed out.

MON wasn’t into the multiple model offering: “The second cover is terrible. I get what they were aiming for, but it’s just terribly done. These women deserve better. Why would you use that backdrop, that styling and that hairstyle which takes away so much from their beautiful faces?”

“This could have been much more dynamic if there were five or less models on the cover. At the present moment, it’s far too crowded and it weakens the strength of the image,” declared Frederic01.

“This is disappointing and I usually really like Pavarotti’s work,” confessed marsnoop2.

Steven Meisel has the Midas touch with every magazine cover and advertising campaign he touches turning into pure gold. Just look at Zara’s mainline campaigns over the last several seasons. Since Spring 2017, campaigns (including the Spanish retailer’s inaugural beauty campaign) have been nothing short of spectacular. Meisel’s Zara Fall 2021 offering is no different. Precious Lee, Meadow Walker, Kirsten Owen, Yumi Nu, Rianne Van Rompaey, Marisa Berenson, Sasha Pivovarova, Amar Akway, Chiharu Okunugi and Raquel Zimmermann are each captured solo with Karl Templer styling Zara’s latest collection.

The end result certainly pleased our forum members. “Dang, this is good!” declared Ed...

“Incredible! What an incredible campaign from Zara, once again, as expected,” raved aracic.

KINGofVERSAILLES shared the same level of enthusiasm: “Kind of shocking that a brand like Zara continues to produce campaigns that look more desirable, refined and frankly far more expensive than many of the ‘luxury’ houses.”

“Glorious campaign… Fabulous to see such an amazing cast (Marisa Berenson being a truly wonderful surprise) and I will forever be a fan of Meisel’s studio shoots. The portrait of Precious Lee is utterly sublime!” cheered vogue28.

“Precious Lee is the best thing that happened to fashion in years. And she just continues to get better with each job,” proclaimed Benn98.

Max Mara and Steven Meisel’s relationship goes way back to the 90s. So when Ian Griffiths welcomed back the legendary lensman to capture the brand’s campaigns in 2016, you can imagine our delight. Campaigns since his comeback have definitely enthralled us to no end. (Although we had to endure Brigitte Niedermair for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.) Now he’s back for Fall 2021 to celebrate Max Mara’s 70th anniversary. Amar Akway, Chloe Oh, Jits Bootsma, Malgosia Bela, Mona Tougaard along with Steinberg pose together against a gray backdrop with Carine Roitfeld on styling duties.

Clearly one model really stood out, however. “Malgosia introduces her young apprentices, who will never be able to match the master,” declared tigerrouge.

“Malgosia looks like a babushka doing a family portrait with her fashionably adopted children,” described GERGIN.

“The rest of the girls look so out of place next to Malgosia, poor things…” voiced kokobombon.

“Meisel’s Max Mara ads are usually hits right off the bat, but the dynamic here between the models is beyond strange. (I almost feel sorry for Malgosia being lumbered with this concept),” stated an obviously disappointed Fiercification.

GivenchyHomme certainly couldn’t agree more: “Malgosia is dominating every picture she’s in. The other models blend into the background. The products they’re wearing are getting lost. The contrast between an experienced top model and a group of newbies does not work.”

“A weak offering of a campaign, especially considering it’s Max Mara celebrating their 70th anniversary. I do love me a Steven Meisel studio shoot with a gray backdrop, but the casting here is atrocious…” noted vogue28.

Ever since Emanuele Farneti took over Vogue Italia, we’ve gotten themed issues in addition to multiple covers. For example, there were 100 covers for September 2020. Not to mention editions dedicated to everything from animals to everyday style. Now for May 2021, the magazine presents the astrology issue featuring 12 absolutely collectible covers by Oliver Hadlee Pearch. Greta Elisa Hofer, Selena Forrest, Amar Akway, Caren Jepkemei, Maty Fall, Anna Ewers, Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Quinn Mora, Loli Bahia, Grace Hartzel, Jill Kortleve, Miriam Sanchez along with Sora Choi sport the same Chanel Pre-Fall 2021 piece picked by Charlotte Collet.

Nevertheless, our forum members certainly aren’t fans. “Farneti could consult an astrologer to see his ideas are terrible!” suggested DK92.

“Who buys these? Not their worst, but a total slap on the face nonetheless,” noted an obviously unimpressed dontbeadrag.

While Style Savvy was clearly far from overjoyed: “Could’ve done more with this theme, but what did we expect from Farneti?”

“I actually like the concept, but the result is just the same old, same old,” LastNight pointed out.

“This is laughably bad. Twelve astrology signs and instead of representing what is unique about each sign, they dress every model in the exact same outfit so they all look exactly the same,” said dfl-001.

“Was it really necessary to style every single girl with the exact same Chanel outfit?” asked 90sbea.

“This is next-level boring. There’s no life nor substance in these photos,” complained a definitely disappointed bluestar.

It feels like an eternity since a cover of Vogue Italia managed to impress us. After all, our forum members regularly call out Emanuele Farneti on questionable choices for the once-loved Italian fashion bible. Now the magazine taps Kim Jones as guest editor with the designer putting out six covers for April 2021. Cover one features his friend and muse Demi Moore by Brett Lloyd. Stella Jones appears on cover two by David Sims and Natalia Vodianova looks elegant and regal on cover three by Paolo Roversi. For the fourth cover, Malika Louback, Amar Akway and Skarla Ali were snapped by Malick Bodian. Binx Walton and Selena Forrest cozy up on cover five by Miranda Barnes, while Adwoa Aboah poses for James Barnor on cover six.

But our forum members weren’t feeling Vogue Italia’s latest covers. “There are decent covers (Natalia, Demi and Malika’s), but the rest are rubbish. An utter humiliation,” declared MON.

“STOP WITH THE THEMES!” proclaimed A.D.C.

“So incoherent and everything seems like an advertorial…” called out YohjiAddict.

Fiercification was also underwhelmed: “Awful like always. At least Steven Meisel gave us some real fashion, beautiful models and color for April. What a difference five years or so make…”

“That cover of Natalia is gorgeous, but the layout ruins everything,” said Ken Doll Jenner.

“How could Vogue Italia think that ugly handwritten stuff is stylish and beautiful? It simply ruins the covers over and over again…” balmain1914 chimed in.

“I hate the disconnect between each of these covers, it looks like it could be half a year’s worth of issues because there’s no cohesiveness whatsoever,” voiced aracic.
