D la Repubblica continues to stomp on the competition and show just about every major fashion magazine on the planet how it’s done. We currently remain in the midst and the glory that is ‘The Fashion Issue’. Following on from Volume #1 which resulted in us here at theFashionSpot hyperventilating over 21 spectacular covers, Volume #2 is evidently no different. Emanuele Farneti dials down the number of covers, to give us a selection of three. Cover one sees Farneti call upon Paolo Roversi, who captures Penelope Ternes, Lina Zhang, Amar Akway and Yar Aguer. Colin Dodgson photographs Jesi Shelnutt for cover two while Ida Heiner serves retro glam on cover three, as she poses for photographer Theo Sion.

“Beautiful!” described forum member mikel upon checking out the Paolo Roversi cover.

“Wow, gorgeous!” chimed in natassia.

Sharing the same level of enthusiasm was Koibito, commenting: “Wow, Volume #1 was too good and beat almost every fashion issue from almost every magazine out there and now Farneti continues with another great one.”

“Paolo Roversi can be very hit or miss to me, but his editorial is incredible compared to Vogue Italia this month,” blueorchid applauded.

“Ida looks stunning!” raved Kishan.

“Absolutely OBSESSED and completely besotted with that Ida Heiner cover by Theo Sion. So unbelievably gorgeous, love the black and white, the beauty styling, the retro vibe…” voiced vogue28.

Over recent seasons, Nicolas Ghesquière has had a select few on speed dial to lens his various different advertising campaigns for Louis Vuitton. As a result, the storied French fashion house’s most recent campaign imagery has been lensed by Ethan James Green, Glen Luchford and David Sims. Ghesquière calls upon Sims once again with the unveiling of the Spring 2024 campaign. Models Loli Bahia, Ida Heiner, Hejia Li and actress Cynthia Erivo assemble before the British photographer’s lens and pose high a top a glass-fronted building on location in Milan. The clear blue skies and Milanese backdrop make for an arresting backdrop against Ghesquière’s Parisian-inspired collection.

Read the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“I do like how bright, fresh, and clean this campaign is shaping up to be! Ghesquière’s mainline Vuitton campaigns tend to be over-complicated in terms of concepts, so the sight of something more minimal is pleasing me to no end. The coloring and lighting are both lovely, love those clear blue skies and the graphic architecture of the building,” admired vogue28.

In complete agreement was dontbeadrag, echoing: “These are good, and I neither am a fan of Louis Vuitton nor of Nicolas, but when it works – it works. Cold and sterile environment, but that sunlight and the styling just work. It is a little basic and simple, but in all the right places.”

Not everyone, however, was so forthcoming. “What a tragic campaign. David Sims is so boring, contrived and so horribly commercial. A joke!” stated 90sFan.

“Insanely cheap,” called out lookatme.

Elin Kling made the genius decision to enlist Steven Meisel as Toteme’s campaign photographer back in the Spring 2022 season, with Vittoria Ceretti and Meisel teaming up for the occasion – to great effect. Africa Garcia, Caren Jepkemei and Rolf Schrader were cast for Fall 2022, Jeanne Cadieu and Julia Nobis joined forces for Spring 2023 while Vivienne Rohner was shot in crisp black and white for Toteme’s jewelry campaign back in late 2023. The Stockholm-based fashion label’s Spring 2024 campaign sees Ida Heiner cast as the face and embodiment of Kling’s latest collection, with the Danish model posing against a sleek grey studio backdrop and doing little much else to deliver a series of minimalist, chic and polished campaign imagery.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Ida looks like a hunchback with short legs thanks to that dress. Steven should know better than that,” voiced WinstonH30 the second the campaign came to light.

“Outdated. Feels like 2007,” critiqued forum member kasper.

Zacatecas570 wasn’t all too impressed this season either, adding: “Dull campaign, dull model, dull brand!”

“Did they really need Meisel to produce this nice but bland campaign?” asked Ihhbl.

“Toteme campaigns can be quite good but sadly this is not one of them. Boring. Maybe some of these old photographers should retire if they’re not feeling inspired anymore. Times change and this kind of photography seems outdated already,” chimed in philophile.

Not everyone, however, was so disenchanted. “Must be extremely easily pleased lately, because despite the general consensus within this thread, I am OBSESSED with this. Instantly took me back to the glory days of American Vogue when Meisel would shoot those exquisite studio stories, which had such richness and depth. This feels like a modern and fresh interpretation of said stories… and I’m loving it,” approved vogue28.

“Meisel’s working his magic for Toteme, and I love to see it!” heralded aracic.

Here at theFashionSpot, we have still not forgiven the powers that be at Condé Nast for giving Eugénie Trochu the green light to change Vogue Paris to Vogue France. At the very least, however, 5 out of the magazine’s 10 cover stars throughout 2023 have been actual fashion models. Trochu ends the year on a high, bestowing upon us Ida Heiner as Vogue France’s double December 2023/January 2024 – which marks the model’s first-ever Vogue cover appearance. In the striking cover image captured on location at Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Danish beauty strikes a commanding pose for photographer Théo de Gueltzl, dressed in a custom look from Louis Vuitton by designer Nicolas Ghesquière (in collaboration with artist Philippe Parreno).

As always, the all-important question remained: were the members of our forums impressed? “Maybe I’m just really not that into contemporary fashion, but I don’t like this at all. It’s not elevated enough to even be registered as high-fashion. It’s just an image of a girl in a cape, one that I simply do not care for,” critiqued aracic the moment the cover struck.

“What Ida is wearing is very caricatured, it looks like a superhero costume!” scolded DK92.

“A magazine that once had Dalí, Fellini, Hitchcock, Chagall, Miró, Hockney and Kurosawa as guest editors of their end-of-year issue is now giving us fashion cosplay in a corridor of an arts center,” tigerrouge chimed in.

Also far from impressed was MON, commenting: “What really disappoints me is the fact that there’s a budget but what’s lacking is the creative direction. You had Ida there, on this beautiful day, with beautiful lighting.. and somehow she ended up just standing there.”

“Once again, another cover of Vogue France which oh so perfectly shows off the stark contrast between the magazine now and what once was. The December/January issues of French Vogue always felt rich, vibrant, and luxurious and whilst this isn’t the worst cover I’ve come across, it’s still just so… subpar and substandard,” voiced forum member vogue28.

As creative director of Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière has called upon a whole rooster of talent to photograph his advertising campaigns for the storied French fashion house. The French-Belgian designer’s selections have included everyone from Bruce Weber to Ethan James Green and Steven Meisel to David Sims. Jamie Hawkesworth is the latest photographer endorsed by Ghesquière, with the unveiling of Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2024 advertising campaign. Echoing the setting of the show, the campaign’s backdrop is that of Lake Maggiore in Italy, with Ghesquière’s cast (including Chu Wong, Mica Argañaraz, Valentina Castro, Ida Heiner and Emma Laird) captured by Hawkesoworth during golden hour, on the island of Isola Bella.

“Some wonderful images here,” fruitbasedsnack chimed in.

Sharing the same level of enthusiasm toward the campaign was vogue28, voicing: “Admittedly I am no fan of Jamie Hawkesworth but this is one gorgeous campaign, and far outshines Louis Vuitton’s mainline campaign for Fall 2023. The colors are gorgeous, as is the lighting and the Lake Como setting is utterly magical.”

“Wonderful campaign. Very beautiful and warm images!” enthused thiago.

Since 2017, Zara and Steven Meisel have proved to be a match made in heaven and the relationship between the two only continues to go from strength to strength, season after season (with a special Zara x Steven Meisel New York clothing collaboration thrown our way just last month). Meisel returns to capture another fashion campaign for the Spanish retailer this Fall 2023 season, which pays homage to French artist and fashion photographer Guy Bourdin. Models Ida Heiner, Angelina Kendall, Nyawurh Chuol, Awar Odhiang, Annemary Aderibigbe and Sacha Quenby become the faces of Zara’s latest Studio collection, transforming into beauties of the 70s (with the help of hairstylist Guido and makeup artist Pat McGrath) as they roam a makeshift luxurious apartment setting.

Per usual, Zara and Steven Meisel has once again been declared a total success by our forum members. “Love, love, love a Bourdin reference. A smidge of Wangenheim in here too,” approved Cocteau Stone.
“I love this, Meisel’s streak of greatness with Zara continues strongly with this campaign. It reminds me of his work for Alber Elbaz’s Lanvin, which I also always enjoyed. Very glamorous!” championed aracic.
In agreement was Overindulgence: “Zara’s the only brand left to truly let Meisel to do his thing (and have the budget for it). Loving this campaign – reminds me of the Meisel x Lanvin campaigns!”
“Well, it’s another fantastic campaign, as expected,” Fiercification applauded.
“It’s all just so glossy, glamorous and so wonderfully executed, that I once again just find myself in complete awe of how superb a photographer Steven Meisel is. Meisel’s campaigns for Zara have been nothing short of spectacular since 2017 and this is no exception. The use of lighting and shadows is brilliant and the girls look sensational,” raved vogue28.
Thiago described the campaign was “wonderful” and we’re not sure anyone could disagree.

Nicolas Ghesquière is remaining loyal to David Sims, as the creative director of Louis Vuitton welcomes back the British photographer once again as his mainline campaign photographer of choice. We have now witnessed Sims capture several advertising campaigns under the creative control of Ghesquière (including Fall 2021, Spring 2022 and Fall 2022 to name a select few) and he’s back for Fall 2023. This time around, we’re venturing out of the studio and out into the French capital of Paris. The actress (and LV brand ambassador since 2017) Emma Stone makes an appearance in the campaign which is an ode to Parisian chic. The cast this season also includes the girls of HAIM and models Annemary Aderibigbe, Capucine Clowes, Feya Voishcheva, Ida Heiner, Qisi Feng, Sacha Quenby, Samile Bermannelli and Valentina Castro.

Members of our forums, however, weren’t so fond of the outcome. “LV spent like $20 on this campaign,” stated an unamused Nimsay.
“I enjoy the vast majority of Louis Vuitton’s advertising campaigns for their accessories and capsule collections, yet the mainline offerings always fall short for me. This season, as expected, is no different and I’m sat here wondering how on Earth this all came to fruition. To describe this as basic would be an understatement,” voiced vogue28.
“I am sorry but I literally laughed out loud looking at Emma’s photo. I mean god, where to start? Her contract must have included a campaign and then decided to put her in without any thinking. Why can’t they just come up with something good? It’s so baffling,” complained TaylorBinque.
Also far from impressed was Lola701, adding: “Something is off for me with this campaign. I wish it had more energy in a way. I also wish the outfits chosen made more sense with the vibe of the campaign!”
“This is so bad,” exclaimed 90sFan.

The biannual publication founded by stylist Katie Grand and now edited by Bryan Yambao (also known as fashion influencer Bryanboy), has favored multi-covers since day one and along with the launch of Issue #5 for the Fall 2023 season, the title has undergone a redesign and boasts a new format.

In order to generate as much hype as possible, a grand total of 29 covers have been produced for us to deliberate over and collect. Cover stars on this occasion include Dominique Fishback, Kesewa Aboah, Vittoria Ceretti, Corbin Shaw, Natasha Poly, Rick Owens, Gwendoline Christie, Leon Dame, Kylie Minogue, Ida Heiner, América González, Davika Hoorne, Adwoa Aboah, Ned Sims, Ikram Abdi, Oluchi Onweagba, Zayn Malik, Alexandra Daddario, Gabrielle Union and Steve Mackey.

During Nicolas Ghesquière’s career at Louis Vuitton, we’ve witnessed everyone from Bruce Weber to Steven Meisel to Collier Schorr to Patrick Demarchelier serve as the brand’s campaign photographer. Recently, the label seems to have settled on David Sims. Following last season‘s triumphant offering captured on the majestic pebbled beaches of Normandy, we’re back in the comfort of the studio for Spring 2022. Actresses HoYeon Jung, Stacy Martin and Samara Weaving appear alongside journalist Agathe Rousselle, singer Lous and the Yakuza plus models Mona Tougaard, Kristine Lindseth, Rianne Van Rompaey, Fleur Breijer, Ida Heiner and Chu Wong all posing against colorful backdrops.

In the eyes of our forum members, however, this season feels like a huge setback. “Even looking past those clip art lens flares, this is awful,” WinstonH20 expressed the moment the campaign dropped.

“I hate the tacky lens flare, like who thought that was a good choice? Quite a low point for Sims,” critiqued aracic.

“Not sure I’ve ever seen worse from Louis Vuitton. Putrid,” complained dontbeadrag.

“This is the dumbest-looking fashion campaign I have ever seen. I’m shocked that this is David Sims. The fake lights, the bright background and the terrible fake dancing,” called out GivenchyHomme.

DK92 was also far from impressed: “I don’t have words to describe this tragedy… In fact, to be quite honest, I can’t even say what’s worse about this campaign because it’s simply a combination of a zillion terrible things!”

“Maybe it should have been shot by Jean-Paul Goude to really push it forward,” suggested Lola701.

“They all probably think that they have created something ‘genius’…” PowerDroid pointed out.

Since Nicolas Ghesquière took over the helm of Louis Vuitton back in 2013, we’ve had advertising campaigns photographed by everyone from Bruce Weber to Steven Meisel to Collier Schorr to Patrick Demarchelier. During the height of the pandemic, even Ghesquière tried his hand at photography capturing the legendary French fashion house’s ads for Fall 2020, Cruise 2021 and Spring 2021. Now for Fall 2021, Ghesquière enlists the expertise of photographer David Sims who whisks us to a pebble stone beach in Normandy, France. Mona Tougaard, Ida Heiner, Maria Cosima, Evie Saunders, Clémentine Balcaen, Jade Nguyen and Kris DeGirolamo come together and parade under stormy skies before Sims’ lens.

The campaign took our forum members by complete surprise. “Whew, thank heavens they changed it up, better than the last couple of campaigns!” appreciated GERGIN.

“This is a definite improvement from what has been going on with Louis Vuitton,” heralded reese06.

“Finally! Now we are talking Nicolas!” Lola701 chimed in.

“About 5 million times better than anything Vuitton has produced within the past five years,” declared dontbeadrag.

“A vast, VAST improvement from those mainline advertising campaigns photographed by Nicolas Ghesquière, which we unfortunately had to endure for multiple seasons in a row,” voiced vogue28.

“This looks rather fantastic! I adore the location and the clothes work so well with this kind of background,” noted [Piece Of Me].

GivenchyHomme was also very much an admirer: “This is the best campaign of his tenure. There is a strong and distinct point of view. It’s edgy and fashion-forward. The images are confident and polished. It makes me feel excited for fashion again.”
